Shooting Tradition in the Nordick Hamlet
While the main community of Heiden celebrates its own Schützenfest with the St. Georgius Brotherhood, the Nordick hamlet has its own traditional Schützenfest — organized by the St. Georgius Heiden-Nordick Brotherhood. The festival grounds are located on Reitweg in 46359 Heiden, right in the middle of the typical Münsterland cultural landscape with farms, country lanes, and forests. The Schützenfest takes place every two years on Pentecost — the 2026 edition is one of the highly anticipated ones.
Three Days of Pentecost 2026 — and a Children's Disco Eve
The 2026 edition runs from Saturday, May 23 to Monday, May 25, 2026, covering the three days of Pentecost. On the preceding Friday evening, May 22, 2026, starting at 3 PM, there will be a children's disco on the festival grounds as an opening event — the start of a family weekend.
The Classic Schützenfest Program
The core of every Schützenfest consists of three pillars: the king's shooting (a competitive sport), the festive traditions (hierarchies, uniforms, parade, coronation), and the festival tent (beer, music, dancing). At the Schützenfest Nordick, these elements unfold over the Pentecost weekend — Saturday marks the start, Sunday features the king's shooting, and Monday includes the traditional morning pint and winding down.
Westphalian Shooting Traditions — A Source of Identity
In the western Münsterland, the Schützenfest is not merely a folkloric accessory but a central source of identity. Most associations were founded in the 18th or 19th century, many bear the names of saints (St. Sebastian, St. Georg, St. Hubertus, St. Antonius), and are closely intertwined with the Catholic parish. The king and queen are chosen through the king's shooting — a sporting tradition with a ceremonial character, where the entire hamlet cheers when the new 'bird' falls.
The Nordick Hamlet — Pure Rural Münsterland
Nordick is one of the traditional hamlets of the Heiden municipality, in the Borken district on the western edge of Münsterland. The area is characterized by agriculture and Catholicism, with scattered settlements, hedgerow landscapes, and vibrant club life. Anyone wanting to experience the western Münsterland authentically will find it at the Schützenfest Nordick — not a tourist attraction, but lived folk tradition.
State of North Rhine-Westphalia — A Stronghold of Schützenfeste
In the Borken district alone, a dozen Schützenfeste take place in the summer. The Nordick festival in Heiden joins this family, with the typical mix of club pride, marquee atmosphere, and festive parades. The two-year rhythm means: those who miss 2026 will have to wait until 2028.
