Grand finale city festival for the 800th city anniversary — September 10th to 13th, 2026
The city of Borken in the western Münsterland region — the district town of Kreis Borken — is celebrating an extraordinary anniversary in 2026: 800 years of city rights. The granting of city rights around the year 1226 marks the historical starting point of the present-day city with approximately 42,000 inhabitants. The 'Borken 800' jubilee year extends from July 2025 to September 2026 — culminating in the grand Jubilee City Festival from September 10th to 13th, 2026.
The 2026 city festival is the highlight of a broadly based jubilee program with numerous anchor events:
For four days, the city center of Borken transforms into a festival mile. On the central market square and in the surrounding streets, visitors can expect a colorful program at various event locations: a large open-air stage, several smaller areas, club miles, children's zones, and gastronomic offerings. Live music (including 'Stadt Beats Borken'), comedy, classical concerts, and community projects are on the agenda. On Sunday, September 13th, the city center opens for a Sunday with open shops, featuring activities from local businesses.
Borken is located in the westernmost Münsterland, near the Dutch border. The city, with its historic town center, well-preserved remnants of its walls, and an active cultural scene, has been the cultural center of the northern Westmünsterland for centuries. The 800th anniversary is a unique event for identity building — and the city community is celebrating it broadly.
City anniversaries like the 800th-anniversary celebration are far more than birthday parties: they are an occasion for historical reappraisal, identity-building community projects, city marketing, and supra-regional recognition. Borken is using the anniversary to mobilize the city community around five thematic areas — and at the end of the jubilee year, the city festival stands as a grand celebration together.
The organizer is the City of Borken via the Borken 800 Jubilee Office. Various event locations in the city center, multiple stages, community projects, and activities. Free admission. A detailed daily program will be published by the city in July/August 2026.
Integrated into the Borken 800 Jubilee Year with prior highlights: Festival Parade (July 2025), Kaiserschießen (July 4th, 2026), 800 planted trees, community projects on family/culture/nature/community/economy.
Detailed program: 800.borken.de.
Free admission. Food and drinks at usual festival prices.
By car: A 31 exit Borken, then follow signs for the city center. By train: Borken (Westf.) station — regional connections from Münster and Coesfeld.
Admission to all city festival events is free. Food and drinks at the stalls are at usual festival prices.
Sunday, September 13th, is a Sunday with open shops — a great opportunity to also experience Borken's city center as a shopping destination.
