An afternoon in summer around John-F.-Kennedy-Platz – live music, workshops, and children's program with free admission
Schöneberg is one of those Berlin districts where political history, multicultural everyday life, and quiet residential areas are found close together. It was precisely on John-F.-Kennedy-Platz in front of Rathaus Schöneberg that John F. Kennedy gave his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech in 1963 – since then, the square has been both a political memorial site and a district center. The Kiez-Sommerfest picks up on this dual role, making the square a stage again for one day, this time for the residents themselves.
The 2026 program combines three elements: a stage with live music (local bands, choir, neighborhood performances), numerous stands from social organizations, clubs, and initiatives, and a packed children's program with workshops, games, and hands-on activities. There is a conscious decision to forgo large sponsor logos and commercial appearances – the festival is non-profit, and all proceeds are directly forwarded to social projects in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district.
With around 350,000 inhabitants, the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district is one of Berlin's most populous districts. Schöneberg is its western half and combines bourgeois living around Bayerischer Platz, the bar and pub scene around Nollendorfplatz, and the immigrant-influenced quarter around Pallasstraße. The Kiez-Sommerfest brings these different worlds of life together on one day.
The festival has existed since 2019. In 2026, it will be the eighth edition – a still young format, but one that has established itself as a firm summer tradition around the town hall square. A model for how a district-supported, free summer festival can function in a densely populated urban area without tipping into commercialism.
