Three days of shooting tradition from the St. Pankratius Brotherhood of 1663 in Nordkirchen-Südkirchen
The Schützenfest Südkirchen is the annual highlight in the Südkirchen district of the Münsterland region. The organizer is the Schützenbruderschaft St. Pankratius Südkirchen von 1663 e.V. — founded the year after the Peace of Westphalia, it is one of the oldest shooting brotherhoods in the southern Münsterland. From August 14th to 16th, 2026, celebrations will take place over three days at the SV Südkirchen sports grounds.
The Schützenfest follows the classic Westphalian pattern:
Südkirchen is one of three districts of the municipality of Nordkirchen in the Coesfeld district — known primarily for Schloss Nordkirchen, the largest moated castle in Westphalia and world-famous as the "Westphalian Versailles." While Nordkirchen carries the tourist brand with its castle, Südkirchen, with around 2,000 inhabitants, cultivates village life — and the Schützenfest is the core of this life.
The brotherhood, with nearly 360 years of history, is deeply rooted in the Catholic club life of the Münsterland region: its patron saint is Saint Pancras, whose relics have traditionally been housed in the Südkirchen parish church for centuries. To this day, the Schützenfest begins with a wreath-laying ceremony at the church and a commemoration of deceased members.
The Münsterland region, along with the Sauerland, is considered the heartland of German shooting traditions. Hundreds of brotherhoods organize their festivals during the summer months, each with its own character and customs. In Südkirchen, the communal breakfast after the Sunday High Mass, the "Frühschoppen before the parade," is particularly popular.
