Picnic festival of queer visibility in Lichtenberg City Park
The Queere Kunst- und Kulturtage Lichtenberg is a young but rapidly growing Berlin festival dedicated to queer visibility in East Berlin. It was initiated in 2022 by the Lichtenberg District Office together with AG Queer Lichtenberg – in response to the fact that most major queer Berlin events have historically taken place in the West or in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. With the festival, Lichtenberg positions itself as a district where queer life can and should be visible.
The venue is Lichtenberg City Park at Parkaue 30 – a green oasis in the densely built-up district of Lichtenberg. The festival uses the park as an open-air festival area with a main stage, market stalls, and a picnic area. This is precisely what makes the festival special: it explicitly encourages visitors to bring their blankets, friends, children, and picnics.
The programme is spread over two days and combines:
Since 2025, the festival kicks off on the eve with the Queeren Filmnächte (Queer Film Nights): open-air film screenings in the city park, featuring queer classics and current productions. The film nights are an extension of the format and aim to extend the festival to three days.
The Berlin district of Lichtenberg has had its own Diversity Officer since 2020 and makes queer visibility a strategic priority. The festival is one of the most visible results of this policy and is now supported by an active network of local queer initiatives.
The 5th Queere Kunst- und Kulturtage Lichtenberg is scheduled for the last weekend of June 2026 in Lichtenberg City Park. The venue is expected to remain the lawn around the main stage at Parkaue 30.
As in previous years, two festival days are planned with the following components: Main stage with queer live musicians and bands, drag and performance programme hosted by a drag personality, market stalls with art, fashion, activism, and queer self-organisations, as well as an open picnic area. The evening before is expected to kick off again with the Queer Film Nights featuring open-air screenings.
The detailed 2026 programme (artists, bands, drag acts, film selection) will be announced by the Lichtenberg District Office and AG Queer Lichtenberg in spring 2026. Based on previous years, the following components can be assumed:
