Every three years — historic peat barge fleet sails from Worpswede to Bremen-Findorff
For centuries, peat shipping was the backbone of the economy in the Teufelsmoor region. The small, flat peat barges transported the peat cut in the moor through the narrow moor ditches and the Hamme river to the Weser and finally to the Hanseatic city of Bremen. Findorff, the present-day district of Bremen, was historically the most important peat transshipment point and owes its name to Jürgen Christian Findorff, the moorland settlement inspector who organized the systematic settlement of the moors in the 18th century.
The Torfkahnarmada is organized every three years as a major joint project of the region between Worpswede and Bremen. Historic peat barges, often lovingly restored, set off in an impressive fleet. Numerous spectators line the banks, and crowds gather at turning points and bridges. The Torfhafenfest in Findorff forms the convivial highlight with catering, music, and a maritime atmosphere.
The Torfkahnarmada is a living symbol of the connection between Worpswede and Bremen, between the artists' village and the Hanseatic city, between the moor and the city. The event is coordinated by Kulturland Teufelsmoor.
The Armada sets off early Saturday morning, following the historic waterway from Worpswede to Bremen. Along the way, spectators line the banks, and small reception stations and bridge guards frame the journey.
In Findorff, the Armada is greeted with catering, music, and a maritime atmosphere. The Torfhafenfest is part of the event and begins in the afternoon.
Program is current as per organizer information. Any changes will be communicated via kulturland-teufelsmoor.de.
