Family festival in the Oberberg district town — fashion shows, kids' area, spring market in the Stadtgarten
Gummersbach is located about 50 kilometers east of Cologne in the Bergisches Land region, with approximately 53,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city and administrative seat of the Oberbergischer Kreis. Characterized by mechanical engineering and steel industry tradition (Steinmüller, L. & C. Steinmüller AG shaped the cityscape until 1999), today it boasts a university of applied sciences and a modern city center around Hindenburgstraße and the Kaiserstraße pedestrian zone. The city life has a friendly, compact character — ideal conditions for a city festival that involves the entire city center.
The Gummersbach Spring Festival has been the unofficial start of the open-air season in the Oberberg district town for years. Organized by the GMerleben Agentur and the GMerleben Verein, presented by Sparkasse Gummersbach, it combines the classic city festival format (market stalls, retail, Sunday shopping) with family entertainment and a cultural program. In 2026, the event will be held in this form for the seventh time — an established destination for families from the entire Oberbergischer Kreis.
The festival extends over three central areas of the city center:
Times: Festival 11:00 AM–5:00 PM, road closures from 9:45 AM.
A special feature of the 2026 edition: The Spring Festival coincides with Weltladentag — the international day of action for fair trade. Local world shops present themselves at the festival, fair trade products are showcased, and information on global trade justice complements the classic city festival program. An unusual but fitting combination — family festival and global awareness on one day.
The Spring Festival attracts visitors from all over the Oberbergischer Kreis: families from Wiehl, Bergneustadt, Marienheide, Engelskirchen, and Reichshof travel for the day. Characteristic is the mix of city festival and family program — unlike pure funfair events, the focus is on fashion shows, live presentations, children's programs, and regional trade rather than rides.
Those who visit the festival can explore the Bergisches Land: Aggertalsperre for recreation, Schloss Gimborn near Marienheide, Lieberhausen with its "Bunte Kerke", Schloss Homburg near Nümbrecht, the Genkeltalsperre. Gummersbach itself is worth visiting for the Theater- und Konzertstätte "Theater Gummersbach", the Steinmüllerpark, and the cityscape with its striking mix of industrial history and modern new buildings.
Seventh consecutive edition under the leadership of GMerleben Agentur and GMerleben Verein. In 2026, with a special focus on "Weltladentag" and a children's program in the Stadtgarten by ECG Bernberg.
