More than a Schützenfest
In the small community of Eilsleben, located about 25 km west of Magdeburg in the Börde district, the shooting tradition has a long history. Since 1909, the local Schützenverein Eilsleben 1909 e.V. has carried on the tradition — and its annual Schützenfest in June is one of the most important social events in the town. What might sound like a nostalgic custom from the outside is lived club culture and social glue here at the same time.
The concept follows the classic shooting tradition: On the first two days — the Schießsportwoche (Shooting Sports Week) — it is sportingly decided who will become king this year. Club members meet at the shooting ranges, end the day with beer and bratwurst, and discuss their scores. The third day, Saturday, is the actual Schützenfest: proclamation of the king, awards for deserving club members, a dance evening with a live band or DJ, a communal meal — and usually a parade through the town to conclude.
The venue is the club's own Schützenhaus on Ovelgünner Straße, an address known to every child in Eilsleben. The grounds have enough space for a festival tent, shooting range, and outdoor areas for games. Unlike commercial Schützenfests, the atmosphere here is familial: people know each other, celebrate together, and guests from neighboring towns like Wanzleben, Hadmersleben, or Erxleben are welcome, but not the central focus. Nevertheless (or perhaps precisely because of this), a visit gains a special quality — you experience a real German Schützenfest, as it's meant to be, without touristy staging.
Eilsleben itself belongs to the vast Magdeburger Börde, Germany's most fertile loess plain, which has been the scene of German agricultural and industrial history for centuries. The region is not spectacular — it is the province in the best sense: green, shaped by agriculture, with traditional villages and small towns, each cherishing its own club cosmos. The Schützenfest is part of this.
Custom with a Sporting Core
Important: Shooting in a Schützenverein today has nothing to do with hunting or glorifying violence. It is a sporting club activity with historical roots — similar to how riding clubs or chess clubs maintain their own traditions. The Schützenvereine in Saxony-Anhalt are organized within the Schützenbund Sachsen-Anhalt and offer youth work and social programs in addition to competitions. The Eilsleben festival is a flagship of this club culture in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
