World music and singer-songwriters in the castle courtyard — the premiere
With the Burgsommer Festival, a new format is launching in the event calendar of the Börde district in 2026: For two days, the courtyard of Burg Ummendorf, which houses the Börde Museum, will be transformed into an intimate open-air stage for world music, folk, and singer-songwriter traditions. The medieval complex with its striking keep and massive defensive walls provides a setting for the event that is rare in Saxony-Anhalt.
The initiators are deliberately focusing on a small scale: a curated lineup, short distances, good food, long summer evenings. Instead of an oversized stage and confusing festival grounds, you can expect a concentrated concert experience with artists who can tell stories — from poetic songwriters to polyphonic voices from Latin America or Ireland.
The moated castle Ummendorf is located in the municipality of Ummendorf on the western edge of the Börde district, about 30 kilometers west of Magdeburg. First mentioned in the 12th century, later a Renaissance palace, today a regional treasure trove of the Magdeburger Börde: By day, the castle is a place of regional history and archaeology — and on the two festival days, an open-air concert hall.
Ummendorf is located directly on the A2 motorway between Helmstedt and Magdeburg and is easily accessible by car. Those who stay longer can combine the concerts with a hike through the Börde landscape, a visit to the nearby Hohen Holz, or a detour to Haldensleben and Wolmirstedt. For a weekend, the castle can also serve as a starting point for tours through the western part of Saxony-Anhalt — Halberstadt, Quedlinburg, and the UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Harz mountains are less than an hour away.
Food and drinks are available throughout both festival days on the castle grounds. The seating in the courtyard is open, with the audience relaxed in a semicircle facing the stage. Arrive early to secure the best seats in the front rows — even if you arrive later, you'll still catch every detail from the end of the castle wall, as the sound is designed for acoustic and finely tuned live music.
The inaugural year of the Burgsommer Festival sets a clear tone from the start: no major headliners, but a well-thought-out program of five acts that musically complement each other. Concerts begin on Friday evening from 7:00 PM; on Saturday, the castle opens at 11:00 AM, with the program extending into the late evening in two sessions.
Magdeburg-based songwriter Simon Becker already has a name in the region — his bridge between poetic songwriting and genre-open folk tradition fits perfectly with the festival's spirit. Felix Meyer brings his warm, melancholic-hymnic songs to the castle stage, while Tres Marias provide the international flair with Latin American polyphony and Celtic Chaos with Irish folk energy. Handgemacht rounds out the program with handcrafted acoustic music.
The exact times for each set will be published by the organizer closer to the festival date on the Börde Museum website.
