Medieval for Advent
There are plenty of Advent markets in Saxony-Anhalt – medieval Christmas markets considerably fewer. One of the most charming among them takes place at Ummendorf Castle, in the Ummendorf district of the town of Oschersleben (Bode) in the Börde district. The organizer is the Börde Museum, housed in the castle, which documents the agricultural and domestic history of the Magdeburger Börde. On the 1st Advent weekend (November 28/29, 2026), the castle courtyard opens its medieval decorated stalls.
Castle Courtyard and Outer Bailey Alley
The market extends over the castle courtyard as well as the streets in front of the castle. Medieval decorated stalls offer handmade goods – ceramics, blacksmithing and leather work, honey, mead, stollen, and mulled wine. Medieval music (bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy) provides the acoustic backdrop, campfires provide warmth. Admission is kept low at €2 per adult – children up to 16 years old have free entry. The market is one of those formats that convey an authentic Advent feeling without kitsch.
Ummendorf Castle — Börde Museum
Ummendorf Castle is one of the most beautiful preserved moated castles in the Magdeburger Börde. It dates back to the 12th/13th century and today houses the Börde Museum with collections on agriculture, domestic economy, rural crafts, and childhood in the Börde. The castle courtyard is a suitable venue for historicizing formats – besides the Christmas market, the castle summer festival, the Rapunzel Day family festival, and the herb garden festival take place in the summer.
Börde District — Saxony-Anhalt's Farmland
The Börde district, one of the most fertile agricultural regions in Europe, is located in the state of Saxony-Anhalt between Magdeburg and Lower Saxony. Ummendorf is situated on the eastern edge of the district, about 30 km north of the Luther town of Halberstadt. Those who visit the Christmas market should ideally combine it with a tour through the medieval towns of the region: Halberstadt, Quedlinburg, Oschersleben.
