Jeremiasfest 2026 — Greek May celebration at PHOENIX See
On Labour Day, Friday, May 1, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Greek Orthodox Church Community "Holy Apostles" transforms the Kulturinsel at PHOENIX See into a small Greek island in the middle of Dortmund. The traditional Jeremiasfest honors the Prophet Jeremiah, who is venerated in several Abrahamic religions and is a symbolic figure for hope and justice.
Program
Solemn Service to Open
The event kicks off in the morning with a solemn Orthodox service in honor of the Prophet Jeremiah. The liturgy will be conducted in Greek and German and is open to all visitors.
Greek Live Music and Folklore Dances
Afterwards, music groups will play Greek live music — from traditional Rebetiko sounds to rousing Sirtaki rhythms. Invited folklore ensembles will present regional dances from various Greek regions (Crete, Peloponnese, Macedonia). Visitors are invited to join in the big Sirtaki dance.
Culinary Specialties
The heart of every Jeremiasfest are the homemade Greek specialties:
- Souvlaki and Gyros fresh from the grill
- Spanakopita (spinach and feta pastries)
- Tzatziki, Taramosalata, and stuffed vine leaves
- Loukoumades (fried honey dough balls)
- Baklava and sweet pastries
- Greek wine, Ouzo, and Frappé coffee
Kulturinsel at PHOENIX See — The Venue
The Kulturinsel is located west of the Phoenix See in Dortmund-Hörde, a peninsula with a direct view of the water and a large open space that regularly hosts cultural events. The Phoenix See itself is a 24-hectare artificial body of water, opened in 2011 on the site of the former Hoesch steelworks — today one of Dortmund's most popular recreational areas.
Greek Orthodox Church Community "Holy Apostles"
The community belongs to the Metropolis of Germany of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and serves the Greek diaspora in the eastern Ruhr area. The Jeremiasfest is one of its most important community festivals and symbolically represents the encounter between Orthodox tradition and multicultural urban society. All denominations and religions are explicitly welcome.
Dortmund-Hörde — Industrial History Meets Recreation
The Hörde district was synonymous with heavy industry and steel production for over a century. After the closure of the Hoesch-Werk Phoenix in 2001, the area was dismantled and redesigned in several stages — today, Phoenix See, Phoenix West (technology park), and the historic Hörde Castle shape the landscape. The lake is a meeting point for walkers, sailors, cyclists, and visitors to countless cultural events.
