Schützenfest Echtz – St. Michael

Schützen under the Archangel Michael

The Schützenbruderschaft v. hl. Erzengel Michael Echtz is one of the traditional clubs in the Düren district of Echtz. Like many Rhenish Schützen brotherhoods, it is named after a saint – in this case, Archangel Michael, the patron saint of Schützen par excellence. The headquarters and venue is the Turnhalle Echtz at Josef-Ebertz-Platz 1.

Date 2026: September 26–27

The 2026 Schützenfest takes place on the weekend of September 26 and 27 – a confirmed date, communicated through the IG-Echtz festival calendar 2026 and the official club website. This places the Schützenfest in autumn, before the start of Carnival preparations.

Festival Year "1001 Years Echtz"

2026 is the grand Festival Year "1001 Years Echtz" (first mention 1025/1026). The St. Michael Schützenfest is part of an extended festival calendar, coordinated by the IG Echtz (Interessengemeinschaft Echtz). Other festival dates in 2026: May Festival of the Maigesellschaft (May 29–31), 125 Years Echtz Fire Brigade (September 5–6), Summer Festival of the Carnival Society (July 4), St. Michael Schützenfest (September 26–27), and other traditional events.

Program in the Rhenish Schützen Style

The program follows the classic Rhenish-Catholic Schützenfest format:

• Saturday evening, September 26: Muster, festival opening, possibly bird shooting or king proclamation, dance evening with live band
• Sunday, September 27: Festival service, morning pint, festival parade through Echtz, king's coronation, coronation ball

The club has maintained the tradition of the king shooting for generations: candidates take turns shooting at the wooden bird, and the winner becomes the new Schützenkönig (king) and represents the club for a year at friendly Schützenfests in the region.

Turnhalle Echtz and Club Life

The Turnhalle Echtz is the central club and event venue in the district. Clubs, schools, and private organizers use the hall, which can accommodate several hundred guests. During the Schützenfest, it is set up as a festival hall with a stage, catering, and dance floor.

Düren-Echtz and the Düren District

Echtz is a district of the city of Düren with active club life. Düren, as a central town between Aachen and Cologne, has around 92,000 inhabitants and is the seat of the Düren district. The region is known as the Rhenish Mining Area and is undergoing structural change away from lignite mining. Echtz has retained its village character thanks to its active club scene (IG Echtz, Schützenbruderschaft, Maigesellschaft, Karnevalsverein, Löschtruppe).
