Traditional festival of the Maigesellschaft Echtz 1877 on Josef-Ebertz-Platz
The Maigesellschaft Echtz 1877 is one of the oldest associations in the Düren district of Echtz. Founded in 1877, it has been preserving Rhineland May traditions for almost 150 years: setting up the Maypole on April 30, the election of the May Queen, and the grand Maifest, which takes place over a weekend in May each year. The 2026 Maifest falls on the Corpus Christi weekend, May 29–31.
The venue is Josef-Ebertz-Platz in the center of Echtz. A festival tent will be erected there, catering will be organized, and the dance floor will be set up. Echtz is a district of the city of Düren with its own village character and a strong network of associations – the Maifest is one of the highlights of the association year.
The Maifest follows the classic Rhineland pattern: Opening on Friday evening with the tapping of the keg and live music, main program on Saturday with a dance evening and, if applicable, the crowning of the King and Queen, winding down on Sunday with a morning pint (Frühschoppen), family program, and the end of the festival. Admission is free, and food and drinks are served in the festival tent at association-friendly prices.
In 2026, Echtz celebrates its 1,001st anniversary (first documented mention 1025/1026). The Maifest is part of an extended festival calendar, which includes, among other events, the 125th anniversary of the Echtz Fire Brigade (September 5/6, 2026), the St. Michael's Schützenfest (September 26/27), and numerous smaller traditional events. The festival year is coordinated by the IG Echtz (Interessengemeinschaft Echtz), where the Echtz associations work together.
Düren, with around 92,000 inhabitants, is a medium-sized center between Aachen and Cologne and the seat of the Düren district. Echtz, located in the south of the city area, has retained its rural character – with community life, traditions, and short distances. The region is known as the Rhineland Mining Area and has been undergoing structural change for years, moving away from lignite mining towards new industries.
Maifeste are a distinct tradition in the Rhineland – related to Karneval, but held in the summer and with their own association system. In the Düren district in 2026, several places are celebrating simultaneously (DN-News lists the dates): Echtz, Birkesdorf, Gürzenich, Birgel, and others. Those who want to experience May traditions in several places can take a short Maifest tour through the district during the Pentecost weekend.
The 2026 edition falls within the grand anniversary year '1001 Years of Echtz'. This gives the 2026 Maifest additional representative significance – the Maigesellschaft 1877 is part of the extended festival calendar of IG Echtz, which coordinates the anniversary year.
The exact hourly program will be communicated shortly before the Maifest by the Maigesellschaft Echtz 1877 via the IG-Echtz event page and the DN-News overview of May traditions in the Düren district.
