Recklinghausen-Essel — historic district with Schützen tradition

Recklinghausen, with around 113,000 inhabitants, is the district capital of Kreis Recklinghausen (Münster administrative district), located on the northern edge of the Ruhr area in Vest Recklinghausen. The district of Essel in the west of the city has its own identity — with the Heilig-Geist-Kirche as its spiritual center and a vibrant club scene. The Bürgerschützengilde und Heimatverein Essel hosts the annual Whitsun Schützenfest, one of the most important district folk festivals in Recklinghausen.

Whitsun Festival — the start of the Schützen season

The Essel Schützenfest is traditionally the Whitsun Festival — the start of the Recklinghausen Schützenfest season. In 2026, Whitsun falls on May 24-25, so the festival runs from Saturday, May 23 to Whit Monday, May 25. The venue is the festival tent on Marfeldstraße, the classic festival grounds in the Essel district.

Saturday, May 23 — Holy Mass and Tattoo

The kickoff on Saturday, May 23, 2026:

• 5:30 PM: Holy Mass in the Heilig-Geist-Kirche — the spiritual start
• 7:15 PM: Grand Tattoo at the Marfeldstraße festival tent — ceremonial honoring of the outgoing royal dynasty
• Afterwards: Dancing with the band Sunbeach in the festival tent (admission 10 EUR)

Sunday, May 24 — Parade and King's Ball

The main festival day on Whit Sunday:

• 11:00 AM: Morning pint with traditional brass music
• 4:00 PM: Grand Parade with around 700 participants through the Essel district — Schützen companies, royal dynasty, music and marching bands
• 8:00 PM: King's Ball in the festival tent with the band Mainstreet (admission 10 EUR)

Whit Monday, May 25 — Bird Shooting

The final day on Whit Monday brings the highlight for the club members:

• 11:00 AM: Bird shooting for the insignia begins
• Approx. 3:00 PM: Competition "for the throne" — the candidates for the royal title 2026/27 shoot down the decisive bird
• 8:00 PM: Victory celebration and King's Ball with the newly proclaimed dynasty — free admission

Change of Royal Dynasty 2026 — a special situation

2026 is a special year for the Recklinghausen Schützen world: three guilds are simultaneously seeking new royal houses — the BSG Essel, the Alte Gilde, and the BSG Bruch. The reigning king of BSG Essel, Markus I. Rengel, will be succeeded by the winner of the Whit Monday shooting. There is a sense of generational change throughout the city.

Whit Monday Tradition and District Identity

The Essel Schützenfest is more than a club event — it is a marker of district identity. On Whitsun, Essel citizens, former members, family members, and guests from other Recklinghausen districts celebrate together. The Bürgerschützengilde, often combined with the Heimatverein, not only organizes the festival but also carries out club activities throughout the year — shooting sports, youth work, social projects.
