Pride demonstration and CSD street festival for the Vest Recklinghausen
If you live in the northeastern Ruhr area, RE-Pride is your Pride address. The organizer is Vestischer Christopher Street Day e.V. (VCSD), a registered association that has been strengthening the visibility of the LGBTQIA+ community in the Vest Recklinghausen since 2019. The historical term "Vest" refers to the Prince-Electorate of Cologne's landscape, which includes Recklinghausen and the surrounding towns – Marl, Datteln, Castrop-Rauxel, Dorsten, and several others. This identity continues to shape the region to this day and gives the CSD its special name.
The 2026 event begins on Saturday, June 13, at 1 p.m. at Europaplatz – Recklinghausen's central bus station, right in the city center. From there, the demonstration around the Stadtwall starts. The Stadtwall follows the course of the medieval city fortifications and encircles the historic old town – a perfect symbolic route for a Pride demonstration, as it carries visibility in all directions. The procession moves through the city with rainbow flags, colorful outfits, music from mobile sound systems, and chants.
After the march, a closing rally will take place – speeches by political representatives, activists from the Vest, and from supra-regional LGBTQIA+ engagement, reports from the community. Afterwards, a stage program will begin with live music, drag performances, and DJ sets. Information booths of queer and solidarity associations from the Ruhr area will line the square: AIDS services, counseling centers, family groups, church communities, political parties.
RE-Pride 2026 takes place concurrently with the Hafenfest (Harbor Festival) in Recklinghausen. The Hafenfest is organized by the association for the Recklinghausen harbor and the city and also shapes the city's events on June 13. The parallel scheduling leads to a double activation of the urban space: traditional folk festival and Pride activism exist side by side, and the joint weekend brings encounters between groups that would otherwise rarely cross paths.
Recklinghausen, with almost 115,000 inhabitants, is the district town of the Recklinghausen district and belongs to the northern Ruhr area. The city is known for the Ruhrfestspiele, one of Europe's oldest theater festivals, the historic Rathaus (Town Hall), and the old Petruskirche (St. Peter's Church). With RE-Pride, the city clearly positions itself as an open region for LGBTQIA+ visibility – a statement in the traditionally Catholic and bourgeois-influenced Vest.
VCSD e.V. organizes the festival on a voluntary basis. In addition to the annual Pride event, it organizes year-round counseling services, networking meetings, educational programs in schools, and political lobbying. RE-Pride is therefore not just a party, but a central anchor point for a community that has to fight for its visibility beyond the major cities of Cologne, Berlin, or Hamburg.
