Harvest like in Grandfather's Time
The Schnitterfest is one of the most traditional festivals at the Museum KulturLand Ries in Maihingen. On the museum's fields, the annual grain harvest becomes a true spectacle: binder machines, tractors, and historical equipment show how rye and wheat were cut, bound, and threshed in the Nördlinger Ries before mechanization.
Museum in the Monastery Complex
The venue is the baroque monastery complex of Maihingen, where the Museum KulturLand Ries, supported by the district of Swabia, documents the everyday life of the region's rural population. The extensive grounds around the monastery courtyard and museum fields provide the backdrop for the reapers and their audience.
Family Program and Participation
The Schnitterfest is designed as a family event: in addition to the harvest demonstrations, there are hands-on activities, catering, and a varied program for young and old. Visitors can watch the helpers with their manual work.
In the UNESCO Global Geopark Ries
Maihingen is located in the Nördlinger Ries, a basin shaped by a meteorite impact and now a UNESCO Global Geopark. The Schnitterfest combines agricultural tradition with the unique cultural and natural landscape of the Ries region.
