Traditional Whitsun festival in the Geiseltal valley
The Pfingstbier in Stöbnitz is one of the numerous traditional Whitsun festivals in southern Saxony-Anhalt. Stöbnitz is now a district of the town of Mücheln (Geiseltal) in the Saalekreis and is located on the Geiseltalsee — the largest artificial lake in Central Germany, created from a former open-cast lignite mine. The mix of old village tradition and new lake landscape characterises the region.
Pfingstbier festivals have a history in the region dating back to the 19th century — the neighbouring village of Gröst, for example, will celebrate the 130th anniversary of its Pfingstbier in 2026. The festival in Stöbnitz, supported by the local Pfingstgesellschaft, an association of young and not-so-young adults who organise the festival every year, is just as deeply rooted.
The Pfingstbier in Stöbnitz begins on Whitsun Sunday at 10 am and runs until the late afternoon. Beer is served on the festival grounds on Werkstraße in the village centre — traditionally by the Pfingstgesellschaft, which maintains its own Pfingstbier barrels. Regional specialities such as Bratwurst, chicken, cakes, coffee, and lemonade are also available. A brass band or a DJ provides the music, depending on the year.
Mücheln (Geiseltal) is located in the Saalekreis in southern Saxony-Anhalt. The town is primarily known for the Geiseltalsee — a water area of a good 18 km², created between 2003 and 2011 by flooding the former Mücheln open-cast mine. Today, it is an important local recreation and water sports area between Halle and Naumburg. Stöbnitz itself is located about 2 km northeast of the lake, a typical village in the region with a baroque church and an intact village community.
Anyone combining the Pfingstbier with a weekend trip can visit the Stöbnitz lido on the Geiseltalsee, go out on the lake with a raft or SUP, take a trip to the historic Saaleck or the Naumburg Cathedral, or visit one of the Saale-Unstrut wineries.
The Pfingstbier in Stöbnitz 2026 will take place on Whitsun Sunday, May 24, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The organiser is the local Pfingstgesellschaft Stöbnitz, a traditional Whitsun association with a long history in the village. Free admission, food and drinks are available on site.
The town of Mücheln will publish current programme details shortly before the date.
