About Bauerntheater Schliersee
Bauerntheater Schliersee — edition 2026
With the generational change at the helm of the association, the Schlierseer Bauerntheater gains new energy in 2026. Martin Hirtreiter leads the venue, which has been in continuous operation since 1892, making it Germany's oldest folk theatre.
The 2026 program mixes traditional folk theatre (plays like 'Die Töchter Josefs' and 'Schlüsselfertig' have already built a loyal audience) with two new productions, each premiering on major religious holidays (Easter, Pentecost) – a tradition of the house.

Germany's Oldest Folk Theatre
Founded in 1892, the Schlierseer Bauerntheater is Germany's oldest continuously performing folk theatre. For over 130 years, generations of Schliersee citizens – farmers, artisans, merchants – have performed Bavarian folk plays on stage in their own venue at Xaver-Terofal-Platz. The theatre is part of the town's cultural DNA and regularly attracts guests from Munich and Tyrol.
New Leadership, Four Plays
The 2026 season marks a generational change: Martin Hirtreiter takes over the chairmanship from Florian Reinthaler after 20 years, with Anton Stögmeier as his deputy. The new team focuses on a mix of two new productions and two revivals of successful plays from previous seasons:
- 'Der Weihrauchwastl' by Erfried Smija – Premiere Easter Monday, April 6, 2026. A comedy about Bartl, whose mayoral ambitions are questioned by his wife, and a mysterious 'Weihrauchwastl' (incense fellow) who causes chaos.
- 'Malefiz Donnerblitz' by Ralph Wallner – Premiere Whit Sunday, May 24, 2026. A lighthearted three-act play about tailor Zwirn and three weather-influencing sisters with magical suitcases.
- 'Die Töchter Josephs' by Franz Gischel – Revival of a folk play.
- 'Schlüsselfertig' by Reinhard Seibold – A realistic satire about building, revival.
Schedule and Format
A total of around 20 performances are spread across the months of April to December 2026. Performances begin at 8:00 PM. Eight performances are scheduled for 'Malefiz Donnerblitz', six for 'Der Weihrauchwastl', and three each for the two revivals. Language: Bavarian dialect.
