Northern German Barn Party of the Rural Youth Klein Bennebek — DJ Night and Morning Pint with Brass Bands
The Landjugend (rural youth) is a comprehensively organized youth association in Schleswig-Holstein with over 13,000 members and one of the most vibrant youth cultures in Northern Germany. Almost every village has its own rural youth group; members organize club evenings, educational trips, sports and harvest festivals, theater performances, and — the absolute highlight of the summer — the annual Scheunenfete (barn party). The Landjugend Klein Bennebek is one of the most traditional groups in the Schleswig-Flensburg district and calls itself LaJu Lütt Bembek in Low German — "Lütt" for "small", "Bembek" for "Bennebek".
The special feature of the Scheunenfete: Instead of a beer tent, the festival is held in a real farm barn. The Friedrichswiese barn at the Sprillbek site near Kropp is transformed into a dance floor for the festival weekend, complete with a DJ booth, lighting system, bar, and dance stage — a Northern German adaptation of the large village disco format.
A Northern German specialty is the Sunday morning pint (Frühschoppen): While city culture sleeps on Sunday mornings, the rural youth and their parents meet at 10 AM in the barn for their first sausage and first beer. The morning pint is accompanied by brass bands (music bands, marching bands) from the region — a mix of traditional music and the relaxed atmosphere of the previous night.
Traditionally, a raffle (Tombola) is held at the barn party, with proceeds going to local clubs — fire brigade, sports club, hospice, church community. Prizes are donated by regional sponsors and range from a six-pack of canned beer to a weekend getaway.
On Saturday evening, September 12, 2026, from 9:00 PM, the Friedrichswiese barn transforms into the region's largest dance floor: DJ Basti Hinrichsen spins through the night — a mix of Schlager, Pop, Charts, Hip-Hop, and Mallorca hits. Hundreds of young North Germans from Klein Bennebek and surrounding villages fill the barn and the festival meadow in front.
On Sunday morning, September 13, 2026, the traditional morning pint (Frühschoppen) follows from around 10 AM: Bratwurst, sandwiches, beer, and music from regional brass bands. The DJ plays alternately with the brass bands — a typical Northern German mix of old tradition (marching music) and modern dance culture.
Throughout the festival weekend, the raffle runs, with proceeds going to local clubs — a nice tradition that secures the rural youth's social character.
