Annual neighborhood festival on Rothenburgsorter Marktplatz
Rothenburgsort is located in the Hamburg-Mitte district, southeast of the city center, squeezed between the Elbe, Bille, and the container terminal. The 1962 storm surge devastated the then densely populated working-class district; afterwards, Rothenburgsort was redeveloped as a residential area. Today, around 9,000 people with a wide range of cultural backgrounds live here – Rothenburgsort is one of Hamburg's most diverse districts.
The Rothenburgsort District Festival takes place annually on Rothenburgsorter Marktplatz and is a central platform for neighborhood care, cultural exchange, and political visibility. The organizers are the Rothenburgsort District Council in cooperation with the Elbpark Senior Residence, the NaJe e.V. association (Neighborhood Association), and other local associations such as Volt Hamburg and St. Pauli Bats e.V.
The festival follows a proven mix:
Rothenburgsorter Marktplatz is the central public space of the district. On normal days a meeting point for the weekly market, once a year it becomes a festival site – the social microcosm of the district spread over an area of about 4,000 square meters. Right next door: the Elbpark Senior Residence, whose residents help shape the festival with their participation.
Unlike commercial folk festivals (Volksfeste), the Rothenburgsort District Festival has a political dimension: it is about neighborhood care in a disadvantaged district, visibility towards the district administration and city government, and strengthening self-organized structures. The participation of the District Council makes the festival a democratic format beyond pure entertainment.
The Rothenburgsort District Festival 2026 is planned again as an annual event by the District Council. The specific date will be communicated by the Rothenburgsort District Council together with the co-organizers (NaJe e.V., Elbpark Residence, St. Pauli Bats e.V., Volt Hamburg) in late summer 2026.
Based on previous years' editions, a date in early September is expected (2025: September 6th). The program traditionally follows the proven format: music on the open-air stage, children's program, culinary diversity from the diverse neighborhood, information stands of local associations, and meeting formats between seniors and families.
