Summery wine festival in a 700-year-old moated castle
Few places in Saarland combine wine and history as impressively as Bucherbach Castle in Köllerbach, a district of Püttlingen in the Saarbrücken Regional Association. The moated castle complex is over 700 years old — one of the oldest preserved castle complexes in Saarland — and has been maintained, restored, and used for cultural events for decades by the Community of Interest for Bucherbach Castle (IG Burg Bucherbach e.V.) on a voluntary basis.
The highlight of the castle calendar is the annual Wine Festival in July. For two evenings, the courtyard, the driveway, and the edges of the ring wall transform into an atmospheric wine mile: tables between the old walls, fairy lights in the trees, the aroma of Flammkuchen, crêpes, and grilled dishes, accompanied by the clinking of wine glasses.
The IG works with selected vintners from the region — primarily from the Mosel, Saar, and Pfalz areas, which are immediately within the catchment area of the Saarland state capital. Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Spätburgunder, Rosé, and Sekt are served by the glass. Those who wish to enjoy the evening quietly can take a seat at a table in the castle's shade with a carafe.
The culinary supply is provided by rotating partner clubs and restaurateurs. In 2025, the Zeisweiler Burger Grill, a local riding club, and TTC Köllerbach were among those represented with crêpes and Flammkuchen. For main meals, there are Saarland classics (Schwenker, Bratwurst), supplemented by international street food options.
A special tradition of the Bucherbach Castle Wine Festival is the election of the Wine Princess, who represents the festival as an ambassador for the IG in the following years. The crowning takes place on the festival stage — a moment that underscores the connection between wine, tradition, and civic spirit.
Köllerbach is a district of Püttlingen and is located in the Köllertal, one of the greener corners of the Saarbrücken Regional Association. Those who extend their festival weekend can combine the visit with hikes along the Köllerbach river, the Köllertal Farmers' Market, or a day trip to Saarbrücken (20 minutes).
The castle is not only the venue for the wine festival but is also active as a cultural center throughout the year: castle concerts, medieval markets, theater performances, audio guide tours, historical exhibitions. The wine festival is the best-known, but by no means the only event organized by the volunteer-run IG.
In 2026, the IG Burg Bucherbach is sticking to the proven format. Selected vintners from Saar, Mosel, and Pfalz, partner clubs, and restaurateurs with varying compositions will provide culinary offerings and entertainment. The exact stage lineup will be announced in July 2026 on burgbucherbach.de.
