Grand forest festival of the BUND Naturschutz under the oaks of the Nürnberger Reichswald
The Reichswaldfest Nürnberg is the large ecological family festival of the BUND Naturschutz in Bayern. The venue is the clearing at the Schmausenbuck observation tower above the Nuremberg Zoo – nestled among historic oaks of the Reichswald. For two days, the forest transforms into a relaxed festival meadow with activities for all ages.
Highlights include tree climbing for children and adults, a colorful children's program by BUNDjugend Bayern with hands-on activities, geocaching GPS treasure hunts, and forest excursions in cooperation with the Nuremberg Forestry Office and the Nuremberg Natural History Society. Topics such as 'How is the Reichswald managed?' and 'The Reichswald in climate change' are on the agenda — topics in 2025 included wildcats and beekeeping.
Culinary-wise, the Reichswaldfest focuses on organic from the region: fair-trade organic coffee, organic drinks, organic cakes, and grilled specialties from ethically raised animals. Beekeepers from the Reichswald present their honey — a direct connection between the forest and consumers.
Numerous nature conservation and forestry associations present themselves: a tombola, information stands, live music, and hands-on activities complement the program. Thus, the Reichswaldfest becomes the largest event in Bavaria that conveys the themes of forest, biodiversity, and nature conservation in a relaxed festival setting.
The Nürnberger Reichswald, with around 25,000 hectares, is one of Germany's largest urban forests and is often called Nuremberg's green wonder. The festival's venue is the Schmausenbuck — a wooded hill with an observation tower offering panoramic views over the city of Nuremberg on clear days.
On July 11th and 12th, 2026, the BUND Naturschutz invites you to the Reichswaldfest on the Schmausenbuck clearing above the Nuremberg Zoo. Under old oaks, an ecological family festival with activities for all ages will take place.
Tree climbing, the BUNDjugend Bayern children's program, geocaching GPS treasure hunts, forest excursions with the Nuremberg Forestry Office and the Natural History Society, as well as stalls from regional beekeepers and associations will characterize the day. Culinary-wise, the festival focuses on organic products from the region.
