Ceramics from three countries on Hildegardplatz — Pottery market in the heart of Kempten
Kempten is considered one of Germany's oldest cities — the former imperial city at the Iller Gate to the Oberallgäu region boasts a history spanning over 2,000 years. Located right in the middle of the historic old town is Hildegardplatz, which provides an ideal market backdrop with its Wilhelminian-era buildings and fountains. Every autumn, the Pottery and Crafts Market takes place here, organized by the Güttinger Pottery from nearby Isny.
What makes the market special is its international mix of exhibitors: around 30 potters and craftspeople from Germany, Austria, and France display their work. The spectrum ranges from classic functional ceramics (bowls, vases, cups) to artistic sculptural ceramics, Raku ware, and salt-glazed ceramics. In addition, craftspeople present jewelry, felt, leather, wood, and textile items.
With its timing on the first weekend of October — shortly before Christmas — the market serves as an occasion for many visitors to purchase Christmas gifts and home accessories directly from the artisans. The exhibitors are usually present at their stands and can provide information on firing techniques, clay mixtures, and the care of their pieces. This is the market's strength compared to online retail — direct contact with the artist.
Both market days are designed to be family-friendly — children can try their hand at various pottery workshops, and the Hildegardplatz café and surrounding restaurants provide refreshments. The market takes place in all weather conditions — exhibitors set up their pavilions, and sales continue.
Those visiting the market in 2026 can ideally combine it with a city tour through Kempten's old town — the Residenz, St. Lorenz Basilica, Erasmus Chapel, Kornhaus, Cambodunum archaeological park — or a walk along the Iller river. Kempten is the largest city in the Allgäu and often still bathed in late summer light in October — ideal conditions for a combined market and city day.
The 2026 Pottery Market brings around 30 exhibitors to Hildegardplatz — all personally present with their own workshop production. Classic functional ceramics, Raku, salt-glazed, and sculptural ceramics form the focus, complemented by jewelry, felt, leather, wood, and textile items. Family-friendly format with hands-on activities for children.
Market takes place in all weather conditions.
