Germany's only all-girl brass band guesting on the North Sea island
For years, the Mädchen-Musikzug Neumünster has traveled to the North Frisian island of Amrum for Pentecost, filling the weekend with brass music. The ensemble is a special feature: Germany's only all-girl brass band, comprising around 30 female musicians who perform march and concert music at the highest level — an unusual sight in a brass band scene that remains predominantly male.
The weekend is spread across several venues: Norddorf, Nebel, and Wittdün. Highlights include the public concert in front of Haus Löwenherz at the AOK clinic on Pentecost Sunday (12:20 PM), the subsequent concert at the cinema (1:00 PM), and the evening concert «Queens of Music» in the Norddorf Community Hall (7:30 PM) with free admission.
Amrum belongs to the Nordfriesland district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and is one of the three North Frisian spa islands (Föhr, Sylt, Amrum). With around 2,300 inhabitants spread across five communities, the island experiences a rhythm between quiet winter months and the high season starting at Pentecost. The guest concerts by the Mädchen-Musikzug traditionally mark the island's summer opening.
Over two days, the Mädchen-Musikzug Neumünster will perform on the island of Amrum. On Pentecost Sunday, the ensemble begins with a public concert in front of Haus Löwenherz in Norddorf (12:20 PM), followed by a concert at the Norddorf cinema (1:00 PM, approx. 1 hour). The Sunday culminates with the evening concert «Queens of Music» in the Norddorf Community Hall (7:30 PM) with free admission — the program features contemporary arrangements of well-known hits by artists like Adele and Taylor Swift, in the ensemble's typical brass sound.
On Pentecost Monday, the band will accompany the festivities for German Mill Day in Nebel. With a polonaise at 12:10 PM through the village, a performance at the mill at 1:00 PM, and a final concert at 2:45 PM, the ensemble will add a festive touch to the historic island community.
By train to Niebüll or Husum, then by bus to Dagebüll Mole and the WDR ferry to Wittdün on Amrum. From there, continue by bus or bicycle to Norddorf and Nebel.
The public concerts are free to attend. The evening concert «Queens of Music» in the Norddorf Community Hall also has free admission.
Norddorf is the northernmost village on the island, featuring the traditional Haus Löwenherz, an AOK clinic located directly at the transition to the dune landscape. Restaurants and cafés are in close proximity to the concert venues.
