About Biikebrennen Norddorf

The Biikebrennen in Norddorf is one of the five major Biike fires on the North Sea island of Amrum. Every year on February 21st, the beach access north of the village center becomes the scene of this ancient North Frisian tradition. A torchlight procession starts at 6 PM through the village to the beach, where the large bonfire is lit — visible far beyond the dunes and out to sea. Hot drinks and snacks warm the visitors; the fire marks the farewell to winter in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

An Island Dedicated to the Biike

Amrum celebrates the Biikebrennen on February 21st with five simultaneous fires in the island villages of Wittdün, Süddorf, Nebel, Norddorf, and on the Hallig side. The tradition is a central component of North Frisian identity and has been UNESCO intangible cultural heritage since 2014. Norddorf, the northernmost village on the island and part of the municipality of Norddorf on Amrum in the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, is considered one of the most atmospheric locations.

Torchlight Procession to the Beach Access

The evening begins at 6 PM with a traditional torchlight procession from Norddorf's village center to the beach access at Strunwai 33. Hundreds of participants — locals and island guests — walk with pitch torches through the small village streets, past thatched Frisian houses, to the beach. There, a meter-high pile of wood, brushwood, and straw has been prepared for days.

The Fire as a Symbol

As darkness falls, the Biike fire is lit. The glow of the fire shines far over the dunes towards the sea — an impressive scene on the wide North Sea coast. Hot drinks (mulled wine, punch, tea with rum) and small snacks are offered on site. The Frisians often give short speeches in Öömrang, the Amrum Frisian dialect — a moment that makes the cultural depth of the tradition palpable.

Highlight of Amrum's Winter Culture

Together with the other island fires, the Norddorf Biikebrennen forms one of the northernmost highlights of the Biike tradition, uniting all five Amrum villages in a common custom. On the island, it also marks the start of the quiet winter season and the communal farewell to winter — before the tourists return with spring.
