Culinary and cultural island festival centered around Amrum's sheep
The Amrumer Lammtage, held in mid-June, are arguably the most atypical island event on the North Sea: a festival that puts sheep at its center. On the island of Amrum, one of the larger islands in the North Frisian Wadden Sea, sheep are far more than just livestock — they are coastal protectors (they keep the salt marshes and dykes short, compacting the soil and helping the dykes withstand storm surges), landscape shapers, and a culinary resource all at once. The Lammtage celebrate precisely this multifaceted role.
The kickoff in 2026 is the Opening Festival on Saturday, June 13th, starting at 12 PM on the Hüttmannwiese in Norddorf. What to expect:
Admission is free.
The highlight of the festival week is the concert on June 16th, 2026: 'The Gregorian Voices — Gregorian Chant meets Pop'. The Bulgarian male ensemble combines Gregorian chant with pop standards from ABBA to Adele — an extraordinary concert experience in one of the island's churches. Advance tickets €26, door €29. A free shuttle service across the island will be available after the event.
The island of Amrum is located in the North Frisia district, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is reached by ferry from Dagebüll (approx. two hours). With its vast sandy beaches — the Kniepsand near Norddorf is considered the widest sandy beach on the North Sea — and its tranquil, dune-rich landscape, Amrum is a classic destination for holidaymakers seeking relaxation. Sheep farming has been an integral part of island life for centuries and shapes the salt marsh culture.
The 2026 edition spans several days across the island. The focus remains on the opening festival with sheep shearing, lamb gastronomy, and traditional costumes. The vintage tractor parade has been a classic for years, attracting both the island community and tourists.
The festival is organized by AmrumTouristik in collaboration with local restaurateurs, shepherds, and the Amrumer Trachtengruppe. Admission to the opening festival is free; the only paid program items are the concert on June 16th and individual gastronomic offerings.
In the period between the opening festival and the concert, island restaurateurs will offer special lamb dishes, and shepherds will open their farms for visits. The full accompanying program will be published in advance on amrum.de.
By ferry from Dagebüll (W.D.R. Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei) to Wittdün on Amrum, approx. 2 hours. On the island by local bus or bicycle. During the Lammtage, there is a free island shuttle service.
Opening festival on the Hüttmannwiese: free. Concert 'The Gregorian Voices' on June 16th: advance tickets €26, door €29. Tickets available at AmrumTouristik branches on the island and online.
Guesthouses, thatched-roof houses, and holiday apartments in Norddorf, Nebel, and Wittdün. Early booking is recommended, especially around the weekend of the Lammtage.
