Summer wine hike through the Westhofen vineyards with stops at historic vineyard huts (Wingertsheisjer)
The vineyard huts, known as Wingertsheisjer in Rheinhessen, are a remarkable architectural and cultural feature of the region. Built from rubble stone, often with small windows and a simple door, they served winemakers in the remote vineyards as protection from the elements, as storage for tools, and as an improvised resting place. With the mechanization of viticulture, many Wingertsheisjer lost their original function and threatened to fall into disrepair. Local heritage associations in many Rheinhessen villages have developed a remarkable restoration initiative in recent decades, saving many vineyard huts from decay.
The Heimatverein Westhofen e.V. is one of the most active local heritage associations in the region and has been committed to the preservation of the Wingertsheisjer in the Westhofen vineyards for years. Several huts have been restored in recent years and now serve as cultural-historical monuments and stops for the annual Wingertsheisjer hike. This event combines heritage preservation, wine, and hiking into a unique summer format.
The hike begins on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 12:00 PM and leads through the Westhofen vineyards. Stations will be set up at the restored Wingertsheisjer, where Westhofen vintners will be serving their own wines, and the Heimatverein will provide information about the history of each vineyard hut. This combination of wine, hiking, and local history makes the day a particularly enriching form of wine hiking.
Westhofen is a traditional wine-growing community in the Wonnegau region with around 3500 inhabitants and is counted among the quality-oriented wine villages of Rheinhessen. Several top wineries are based here, and the Westhofen vineyard sites, especially the famous Kirchspiel and Brunnenhäuschen, are among the highly rated sites in the region.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Heimatverein Westhofen in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points from previous years:
