Culinary autumn festival & sporting fun run on the North Sea island of Amrum
Amrum, along with Sylt and Föhr, is one of the North Frisian Islands, but it is significantly smaller and less crowded with tourists than its famous neighbor Sylt. The island boasts the Kniepsand, one of the largest sandy beaches in Europe – a vast, largely natural beach that dominates the northern part of Amrum. The combination with the Muscheltage and the Insellauf makes the September festival week one of the island's most characteristic event dates.
At the beginning of September, Amrum's restaurants open their menus for a joint mussel festival program. The official opening festival usually takes place in the center of one of the island's villages (Wittdün, Norddorf, Nebel, or Süddorf) – with live music, an opening concert, a colorful children's program, and the traditional costume dance, where islanders and guests dress up.
A few days after the start of the Muscheltage, the Insellauf takes place – one of the most scenic fun runs in Northern Germany. Start and finish: AOK-Nordseeklinik Norddorf. Three routes are available:
Start at 11:00 AM. Entry fee €20 incl. T-shirt, medal, and certificate. Organized by TSV Amrum in cooperation with AmrumTouristik AöR.
What makes this combination extraordinary is the contrast between its culinary-rural character and the sporting challenge: You can feast on mussels and live music on Thursday, then run through the Kniepsand on Saturday – both experiences in the same place, in the autumn on a North Sea island.
As in previous years, the Amrum festival week in September is divided into two main focuses: the culinary-cultural Muscheltage at the beginning of the month and the sporting Insellauf in the middle. AmrumTouristik AöR and TSV Amrum jointly coordinate the events.
The exact dates for the individual Muscheltage programs (opening festival, costume dance, children's program) will be announced by AmrumTouristik in advance on amrum.de. The date for the Insellauf is confirmed: Saturday, September 19, 2026, with a start at 11 AM.
Muscheltage events are mostly free, food in restaurants à la carte. Insellauf: €20 entry fee includes functional T-shirt, medal, and certificate. Registration via email to [email protected].
By car to Dagebüll-Mole (A23/B5 from Hamburg, then L8 to Dagebüll), then take the W.D.R. (Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei) ferry to Wittdün/Amrum. Ferry crossing approx. 2 hours. From Niebüll train station, take a bus or taxi to Dagebüll-Mole.
Email: [email protected] or via the event page amrum.de/veranstaltungen/norddorf-auf-amrum/e-insellauf. Entry fee €20 (incl. T-shirt, medal, certificate).
Accommodation options in Norddorf, Nebel, Süddorf, Wittdün. High season in summer, often more relaxed booking in September.
