Picnic dinner entirely in white on the west end of Föhr — sunset, singer/songwriter, and views of the neighboring islands
The concept originates from Paris: in 1988, François Pasquier organized the first picnic dinner with friends, all dressed in white, at a public Parisian location. Today, Dîner en Blanc takes place worldwide in hundreds of cities. Föhr has adapted the format to its North Sea coast — with several summer editions per season on the western beach of the municipality of Utersum.
The event area is the Utersum Beach in front of the Haus des Gastes (Klaf 2). Here the sand is widest, the view to the west is clearest — the neighboring islands of Amrum to the south and Sylt in the distance to the northwest can be seen. In clear weather, the setting sun bathes the sand in golden light — the ideal setting for a white picnic.
The concept is purist: Free admission, no registration. Those who want to participate bring their own tables, chairs, dishes, tablecloths, food, and drinks — all in white. The organizing team from Föhr Tourism and the municipality of Utersum only coordinate the dates and provide the live music.
A special feature of the Föhr edition: the picnics are accompanied by live singer/songwriter music. In 2025, Theo Klattenhoff performed with his guitar — a local singer/songwriter connected to the North Frisian island scene. The combination of picnic and acoustic concert gives the event its special charm.
Föhr, with around 82 km², is the second-largest North Frisian island and belongs to the district of Nordfriesland (Schleswig-Holstein). Utersum is located at the western end of the island — a municipality with around 400 inhabitants, boasting Föhr's widest beaches. The quiet, South Schleswig island atmosphere (Frisian language, thatched-roof houses, geest landscape) gives the White Dinner its very own character — miles away from the Mediterranean glamour of the original Parisian Dîner en Blanc, but with the unique beauty of the North German Wadden Sea world.
June 17, 2026, marks the first White Dinner of the season on Föhr. In good weather, the picnic will take place on the sandy beach; in case of rain, the event will move to the Strandkorbhalle. Those who wish to participate should arrive at the beach in good time before sunset to set up their tables and chairs.
As in previous years, the event is accompanied by live singer/songwriter music — the Föhr and North Frisian artist scene regularly provides acts for the White Dinner series. The specific artist for 2026 will be announced via Föhr Tourism.
Free admission. Bring your own food and drinks.
By Ferry: The Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei (W.D.R.) operates regular services between Dagebüll (mainland) and Wyk on Föhr. From Wyk, take a car, bus, or bike to Utersum at the western end of the island (approx. 30 min.).
Free admission, no registration required. Bring your own tables, chairs, dishes, food, and drinks — all in white.
In case of rain, the picnic will be moved to the Strandkorbhalle (beach chair hall) — the event will always take place, regardless of the weather.
