Utersum, the smallest island village on Föhr
Utersum is located on the west coast of the North Frisian island of Föhr in the district of Nordfriesland, Schleswig-Holstein. The tiny village has around 400 inhabitants and, with its thatched-roof houses, sandy beach, and view of the North Sea, is one of the quietest places on the island — until a weekend in August when the pirates take over.
A Camp Full of Adventure
For the Pirate Spectacle, the island village transforms into a pirate camp with activity stations where children complete various challenges. Those who successfully complete all stations can take home a pirate diploma. Treasure hunt, pirate cannon, plank walk, and face painting are the focus — and there's singing too, together and loud. The event is aimed at families with primary school-aged children, but is also suitable for younger children.
Accessible, Frisian, Free
The concept fits the island: no entrance fee, no registration, no stress. You can come spontaneously, stay for an hour, or follow the action all day. Föhr Tourismus GmbH organizes the spectacle as part of its summer children's program, which has made the island one of the most family-friendly destinations in Northern Germany for years. Combined with Utersum's beach (nudist area) and the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage site, the Pirate Spectacle is a welcome addition to the summer holiday program.
