Classical Lunch Concert in an Art Museum on the Island of Föhr
The Museum Kunst der Westküste in Alkersum on the island of Föhr is unique: founded in 2009 by the Danish physician and entrepreneur Prof. h.c. Frederik Paulsen, it houses an outstanding collection of paintings and graphics on maritime themes – works by German, Danish, Dutch, and Norwegian artists from the 19th and early 20th centuries, complemented by contemporary positions. Since 2012, at least one concert of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (SHMF), one of Europe's largest classical music festivals, has taken place here annually.
The lunch concert format is particularly popular at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival: a compact concert around midday, usually lasting 45 to 60 minutes, with admission to the museum included – ideal for island holidaymakers who want to combine their day with art, music, and a stroll along Föhr's beaches. There are few classical music events on Föhr itself each season, making the SHMF concert in Alkersum a highlight.
Föhr, with around 8,700 inhabitants, is the second-largest German North Sea island. It belongs to the district of Nordfriesland and is accessible via ferry from Dagebüll. Unlike Sylt, Föhr is rural, Frisian, and tranquil – thatched farmhouses, small village churches, long beaches, and its own main island town (Wyk). Alkersum is located inland, about seven kilometers from Wyk, and is easily accessible by bus or bicycle.
A special feature of the SHMF performances at the Museum Kunst der Westküste: during the festival, concertgoers receive discounted admission to the museum (€8 instead of the regular €12). You can view the collection before or after the concert – a pre- and post-concert program that turns the lunch concert into a half-day island excursion.
