Opening concert of the folkBALTICA festival in St. Johannis Church Nieblum
Nieblum is a district of the town of Wyk auf Föhr in the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. With its thatched Frisian houses, the village is considered one of the most beautiful Frisian villages. St. Johannis Church, dating from the 13th century and known as the "Frisian Cathedral," is one of the oldest and largest island churches on the North Sea. It is regularly used as a concert venue by the folkBALTICA festival.
The folkBALTICA festival has been held annually in May since 2005 and is dedicated to the music of the Nordic and Baltic countries — folk, traditional music, new interpretations, and crossover formats. Venues are spread across Schleswig-Holstein and the Danish region of Sønderjylland: Flensburg, Husum, Schleswig, Tonder, and smaller towns. The concept intertwines cross-border culture at one of Europe's oldest cultural borders.
The Kiming Ensemble will open the 2026 festival on May 2 with the island concert in St. Johannis Church Nieblum. The ensemble will also perform its program the following day (May 3, 8 p.m.) in Sct. Clemens Church on Rømø, Denmark — a typical cross-border folkBALTICA format.
The opening concert in Nieblum is one of the traditional openings of the folkBALTICA festival. St. Johannis Church (Frisian Cathedral), a medieval building with special acoustics, provides a fitting setting for folk music from the Nordic-Baltic region.
The Kiming Ensemble kicked off the festival; the next concert performance took place the following day at 8 p.m. in Sct. Clemens Church on Rømø (Denmark) — a cross-border concert format, typical for folkBALTICA.
The folkBALTICA festival 2026 runs from May 2 to 10 with concerts, double concerts, workshops, and family programs at venues in Flensburg, Husum, Schleswig, and in Danish Sønderjylland. Over 25 artists and ensembles are featured in the festival program.
