City of Lights in the Western Münsterland

Bocholt is located in the far west of North Rhine-Westphalia, just a few kilometers from the Dutch border – one of the medium-sized towns in the Münsterland region. The Bocholt Christmas Market is its most important Advent event: for nearly four weeks, the market winds through the city center, with the Historic Town Hall as an impressive backdrop. The Renaissance building from the 17th century (rebuilt after World War II) features a large, ever-growing Advent calendar on its facade during the Christmas season.

Opening Hours and Opening Ceremony 2026

The opening ceremony takes place on Thursday, November 26, 2026, starting at 5 PM – with mulled wine, almonds, handmade crafts, and a musical welcome. Traditionally, Mayor Christian Mangen and the reigning Wine Queen will be present. The market is open daily from 12 PM until December 21, 2026. Additionally, on the late-night shopping Sunday (December 14), there will be an extended program with shops open in the city center.

Three Areas: Rathausplatz, Neutorplatz, St.-Georg-Platz

The market extends over several squares and streets: The market square in front of the Historic Town Hall is the classic center with stalls for mulled wine, potato pancakes, bratwurst, and crafts. Along Neustraße and the beginning of Nordstraße, the stalls reach Neutorplatz, where an ice rink is set up, which will remain open until February 1, 2026 – well beyond the market's closing date. New since 2025 and returning in 2026: the Winter Village on St.-Georg-Platz with five original ski gondolas from the Rosenalm cable car in Zillertal, Austria, which can be reserved as heated seating capsules for six people each (three time slots daily, €10 per gondola, reservation through the city).

Advent Program

The city organizes live music with choirs, brass bands, and local bands on the four Advent weekends. In addition, there is a visit from Santa Claus on December 6, an Advent calendar on the Town Hall, a children's ride ('Schlitterspaß'), and walking acts with Christmas figures. More than 30 large-scale light installations – angels, reindeer, stars – illuminate streets and squares, making an evening stroll an attraction in itself.

Bocholt — Tradition Between Münsterland and the Netherlands

Bocholt, in the Borken district (North Rhine-Westphalia), has around 71,000 inhabitants and is a significant retail and industrial center in the western Münsterland region. The city center, with its pedestrian zone and historic market square, is ideal for Advent events. Due to its proximity to the border, Dutch visitors are regularly found at the Christmas market – the city markets its event bilingually.

Christmas Market Bocholt — edition 2025

The 2025 edition saw the debut of the winter village with five original ski gondolas from Zillertal on St.-Georg-Platz – a unique format in Germany. Opening on Thursday, November 27, 2025, starting at 5 PM with Mayor Christian Mangen. Market from the market square via Neustraße to Neutorplatz, ice rink on Neutorplatz.

The premiere of the winter village with ski gondolas in Bocholt was positively received by the public and press; early in 2026, the city announced it would continue the concept the following year. The Advent calendar on the Historic Town Hall, the more than 30 light installations, and the 'Schlitterspaß' for children were also fixed program elements.
