Four-day wine festival in the historic Mainfranken wine village
About 15 kilometers south of Würzburg lies Sommerhausen am Main: a picturesque wine village with a medieval town wall, half-timbered houses, the famous Torturmtheater (the smallest professionally run theatre in Germany), and a strong viticultural tradition. Sommerhausen is one of the wine villages where Franconian wine culture can be experienced particularly intensely — from the traditional Bocksbeutel bottle to a classic Franconian wine tasting in one of the historic inns.
Several clubs in Sommerhausen organize their own wine festivals during the summer — the Weinfest der TSG Sommerhausen (Turn- und Sportgemeinschaft - Gymnastics and Sports Association) is one of the newest and at the same time most characteristic of these festivals. It takes place every year at the end of July / beginning of August on four consecutive evenings at the historic 'Am Plan' — Sommerhausen's central market square.
The festival runs daily from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM. This late festival time is intentional: it fits the idea of a Franconian summer evening, where after work, following the sunset over the vineyards, people gather in the town centre for wine and conversation. The historic setting with its half-timbered facades, town wall, and the Main riverbank makes the festival visually one of the most beautiful in Mainfranken.
The TSG Sommerhausen wine festival 2026 will take place from Thursday, July 31, to Sunday, August 3, 2026, daily from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM, 'Am Plan' in Sommerhausen. The dates have been confirmed by the event platform Mainfranken24 and in the Würzburger Leben magazine.
The focus is on drinking and experiencing Sommerhausen's top wines at the Bocksbeutel Bar — the typical flat, bulbous bottle from Franconia, which is integral to Sommerhausen's identity. The wines will be accompanied by bratwurst, Franconian cheese, fries, and classic Franconian snacks. Every evening, a live band will provide musical entertainment.
The specific band bookings for each evening will be published by TSG Sommerhausen before the festival begins.
Free admission. Wine, food, and drinks are paid for at the stands at calculated Franconian festival prices.
Sommerhausen is located on the B 13 between Würzburg and Marktbreit. Take the train to Ochsenfurt or Würzburg, then continue by bus. It's about a five-minute walk from the Main river parking lot to the town centre 'Am Plan'.
Free admission. Wine, food, and drinks are paid for at the stands at fair prices.
Those visiting Sommerhausen for the first time should combine the day with a walk through the vineyards or a visit to the Torturmtheater. A detour to one of the award-winning Sommerhausen wineries, such as Schloss Sommerhausen, is also recommended.
