Franconian May Festival-Wine Festival in one of Bavaria's most beautiful wine villages
The Sommerhausen Winzerfest on May 1st is one of the classic Franconian spring wine festivals. Unlike the major wine festivals of the main season (July, August, September), it marks the start of the summer wine festival season: on a single festival day — May Day, which is a public holiday in Bavaria — the vintners of Sommerhausen invite you to a combined vineyard hike and wine tasting.
Sommerhausen is located in the Würzburg district in Lower Franconia (Bavaria), on the right bank of the Main river between Würzburg and Ochsenfurt. The village, with around 1,700 inhabitants, is one of the best-preserved medieval wine villages in Franconia — the town wall, the towers, the historic town hall, the parish church, and countless half-timbered houses are largely intact. Sommerhausen is also a theater and artists' village: the Torturmtheater in a town wall tower is known far beyond the region, and Schloss Sommerhausen hosts an art scene. This mix of wine, history, and culture shapes the character of the place.
The central program point of the Winzerfest is the vineyard hike. Starting from the village center, a guided tour leads through the Sommerhausen vineyards — Steingrubenberg, Reifenstein, and other individual sites that make up Sommerhausen wine. At several stations along the vineyards, the vintners offer wine tastings of their current vintages — from Silvaner (Franconia's leading grape variety) to Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, and Scheurebe, as well as Pinot Noir and experimental varieties.
Sommerhausen is located in the Franconia wine-growing region, where Silvaner is the leading grape variety. The typical Franconian Silvaner is dry, mineral, and pairs well with Franconian cuisine. In addition, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Bacchus, Scheurebe, and various red wines are grown in Sommerhausen. The Sommerhausen wines are traditionally bottled in the characteristic Franconian bottle, the Bocksbeutel.
Sommerhausen cultivates a distinct wine festival culture with three main events per year:
The May Winzerfest is the first of the three and is considered the most scenically beautiful of Sommerhausen's wine dates — the vines are in young green, and the Main landscape appears in spring bloom.
The 2026 edition of the Sommerhausen Winzerfest falls on May Day, May 1st, 2026. Starting from the village center, the vineyard hike will take you through the Sommerhausen vineyards — Steingrubenberg, Reifenstein, and other individual sites.
Along the hiking route, the stands of the Sommerhausen vintners will be set up: each vintner will present the current vintages of their varieties — with Silvaner as the leading Franconian grape variety in the foreground, alongside Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Bacchus, Scheurebe, and various red wines (including Pinot Noir).
The Franconian wines are traditionally offered in the characteristic Bocksbeutel bottle. Accompanied by wine and wine tasting, there will be Franconian specialties — bratwurst, bread platters, wine-cheese compositions, and depending on the stand, homemade Franconian cuisine.
Note: The 2026 festival dates in Sommerhausen are provisional; updates will be available through Sommerhausen's tourism and vintner channels.
Sommerhausen is located on the Main river, approx. 15 km south of Würzburg. By car via the A 3 (Frankfurt–Nuremberg, exit Heidingsfeld) or the B 13 (Würzburg–Ochsenfurt). By boat from the Würzburg Mainufer in summer ("Mainschifffahrt"). Parking spaces around the village center.
Admission to the vineyard hike and the festival is free. Wine tastings and food at the vintner stands are paid for on-site.
