Three-day medieval festival with the knight tournament "Der Herzstein" at the traditional castle grounds Broich
When Whitsun week arrives, the most important medieval festival in the region begins in the west of the Ruhr area: the Whitsun Spectacle at Schloss Broich. From Saturday, May 23rd, to Monday, May 25th, 2026 (Whitsun Monday), the Schloss Broich grounds in Mülheim an der Ruhr — one of the oldest preserved castle buildings in the Ruhr area — will be transformed into a medieval world of experience for the 20th time.
The motto of the 2026 edition is "Der Herzstein" — a narrative framework that connects the knight tournament and the acting programs. The concept focuses on a coherent story across all three festival days, rather than isolated show blocks.
The impressive knight tournaments are the heart of the festival. Over the three days, a total of six tournaments will take place:
At the medieval market in the castle courtyard, selected merchants offer jewelry, leather goods, wood carvings, medieval clothing, and coat of arms painting. Additionally: strolling jugglers, storytellers, and taverns with mead, beer, and medieval cuisine.
Two regular music ensembles will accompany the Whitsun Spectacle 2026:
In addition, street musicians and acting troubadours will wander through the castle grounds and perform spontaneously.
The Schloss Broich grounds are among the oldest defensive structures in the Ruhr area — origins in the 9th century, with medieval substance still visible today. Its location in Mülheim-Broich on the slope above the Ruhr makes the castle the perfect backdrop for a medieval festival: real walls, real castle ramparts, no cardboard cutout castle.
The festival is designed to be family-friendly: juggling demonstrations, storytellers for children, child-appropriate plays. A family ticket for 2 adults and up to 3 children costs €40 — an attractive pricing model for a family Whitsun weekend.
Admission prices: Adults €16, Children under 14 €8, Family €40. Discounts available for costumed visitors and severely disabled persons. Getting there: Subway lines 102, 901 (stop Schloss Broich), Bus lines 125, 131, 135, 752. Parking Stadthalle (5 min walk) or downtown parking garages.
