Saarland and France — Living Together

German-French friendship is not an abstract concept in Saarland, but a part of everyday life. No other German federal state has such an intensive relationship with its French neighbor — language lessons start early, many Saarlanders work in France or vice versa, the economic areas are intertwined, families cross borders. The Wittersheim Partnership Festival is a wonderful example of this.

Wittersheim — Bliesgau Idyll

Wittersheim is a district of the municipality of Mandelbachtal in the Saarpfalz district, in the south of Saarland, directly on the French border. The village is located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau — one of Germany's most ecologically valuable cultural landscapes. Traditional orchards, streams, and rolling hills characterize the landscape, and the village itself has retained its rural charm.

Freundschaftsplatz am Bach — The Name Says It All

The festival grounds are not called 'Freundschaftsplatz am Bach' by chance — it was named in honor of the town twinning between Wittersheim and its sister community in Lorraine. A stream (presumably the Mandelbach or a tributary) babbles right past the festival area, old trees provide shade, and benches and tables are set up in the open air. An idyllic setting, far from the hustle and bustle of larger cities.

Music, Culinary Delights, Encounters

The program traditionally focuses on encounters rather than large-scale events. Local music clubs from Wittersheim and the French partner community play alternately, and residents from both places serve their regional specialties — Saarland's Lyoner, Schwenker, and Dampfnudeln alongside Lorraine's Quiche, Coq au Vin, and Tarte aux Mirabelles. Wine from nearby Lorraine, beer from Saarland — the border disappears with every sip and every bite.

Mandelbachtal as a Biosphere Municipality

Mandelbachtal is a municipality in the Saarpfalz district with just under 9,000 inhabitants, composed of several small districts (including Wittersheim, Ommersheim, Erfweiler-Ehlingen, Bebelsheim). The municipality officially sees itself as a 'Biosphere Municipality' within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau and emphasizes sustainable development, the care of traditional orchards, and gentle tourism. The Partnership Festival fits perfectly with this self-image — a small, personal festival with great symbolic significance.
