About Corpus Christi Coburg
Corpus Christi Coburg — edition 2026
On the Solemnity of Corpus Christi 2026, the Catholic community of Coburg City and Country gathers at 9 a.m. in the parish church of St. Augustin for a festive Eucharist. Priests and deacons of the pastoral care area will concelebrate the service, during which the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for the subsequent procession. The procession winds through the historic old town with stops at Ehrenburg Palace, the Protestant city church of St. Moriz, and on the market square, where a sacramental Eucharist will be held with the participation of the public. Via the Spitaltor gate, the procession returns to the parish church of St. Augustin. A Catholic Island in Protestant Upper Franconia
The Corpus Christi Procession Coburg is one of the most important religious events for the Catholic community in the free city of Coburg and the surrounding district of Coburg, a region in Upper Franconia (Bavaria) that is historically predominantly Protestant Lutheran. Precisely for this reason, the solemn procession through the city center of the Vestestadt holds special significance for the Catholic minority: it is a public declaration of faith in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and, at the same time, showcases the vibrant diversity of the Diocese of Bamberg, to which Coburg belongs.
The Course of the Celebration
The celebration begins at 9 a.m. with a solemn Eucharist in the parish church of St. Augustin. Afterwards, the procession proceeds through the old town of Coburg, accompanied by the ringing of bells and singing. The first stops are at Ehrenburg Palace – once the residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha – and at the Protestant city church of St. Moriz, underscoring the ecumenical dimension of the procession. A sacramental Eucharist is held on the central market square, with seating provided for the faithful, before the procession returns to the parish church of St. Augustin via the historic Spitaltor gate.
The Participating Parishes
- St. Augustin Coburg – the city's main parish church, built in neo-Gothic style
- St. Marien Coburg – the second city parish
- St. Maria Königin Bad Rodach with its filial churches
Together, they form the "Catholic Pastoral Care Area Coburg City and Country," which organizes the procession.
The Parish Festival Afterwards
After the procession – traditionally starting around 11 a.m. – the parish festival around the parish and deanery center of St. Augustin invites all the faithful to socialize. The Oberelldorfer Blaskapelle provides lively music, complemented by Franconian specialties, coffee and cake, and activities for children. The parish festival combines the spiritual depth of the Solemnity with the vibrant community of a Catholic parish in the heart of a predominantly Protestant region.
