Three-day town festival with stage program in the historic small town on the Werra
The Themar Town Festival is spread across several squares and streets in the town center. The main stage is the market square with the historic town hall; other stages can be found at the town church and in the side streets around the town center. Between the stages, there are food stalls, market booths with arts and crafts and regional products, and activity areas for children. For three days, the old town is an open festival area – car traffic is largely excluded during the festival.
The stages feature a mix of regional cover bands, solo artists, dance groups, marching bands, and a headliner group for Saturday evening. The program is specifically designed for a broad audience: German Schlager, pop, and rock dominate, supplemented by classical folk music, cover bands from the 70s and 80s, and a children's program on Sunday morning. Showmen, amusement rides, and carousels are also set up in the activity areas – a small Kirmes (funfair) atmosphere complements the cultural program.
Themar is located in the Hildburghausen district in the state of Thuringia, on the Werra river, on the edge of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. The town has a rich history: first documented mention in the 12th century, an important trading town on the Werra route in the Middle Ages, later part of various Thuringian principalities. The old town with its market square, town hall, town church, and some preserved half-timbered houses forms the historic backdrop for the town festival. Themar has around 2,800 inhabitants – the festival setting is small, but the family atmosphere is all the more pronounced.
The Themar Town Festival is part of a rich festival calendar along the Werra Valley: the Eisfeld Kuhschwanzfest, the Hildburghausen Old Town Festival, the Schleusingen Town Festival, and the Schmalkalden Town Festival Hirschessen are all within driving distance. Anyone traveling in the southern Thuringian Forest in August can visit a different town festival almost every weekend.
From August 23 to 25, 2026, the Themar Town Festival will open in the town center. Several stages with live music, arts and crafts at the market stalls, showmen and carousels, regional cuisine, and a children's program will bring together the people of Themar and their guests for three days.
The complete stage program will be published before the festival on themar.de and on the town's social media channels.
