Second-largest student festival in Karlsruhe — Open air between the KIT dormitories with a long tradition and free admission
The Parkplatzfest Karlsruhe is, after the Unifest, the second-largest student festival in the city — and the only major student open air based on the student dormitories themselves. The parking lot in Willy-Andreas-Allee 1–7 becomes a festival site for one night each year, framed by the four dormitories HEK (Hans-Erlwein-Kolleg), RSH (Rudolf-Steinmetz-Haus), ABH (Adolf-Bayer-Haus), and D7. Around 4,000 visitors come — students from KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), DHBW, Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, and Karlsruhe University of Education, as well as many Karlsruhe residents and alumni.
The festival is organized entirely by students themselves. Each of the approximately 30 dormitory floors operates its own stand — one offers wraps, the next pizza, the third homemade cocktails, the fourth beer, the fifth bratwurst. The prices are deliberately student-friendly: beer €3, cocktail €5, food €4–6. Bands from the regional and national indie, rock, and hip-hop spectrum play on the main stage — no top acts, but good mid-tier performers, often with KIT students in the lineups. Sponsors like Badische Backstub and Consileon cover the main organizational costs (stage, musician fees, infrastructure).
Karlsruhe, with over 311,000 inhabitants, is the second-largest city in Baden-Württemberg and the seat of federal courts (BGH, BVerfG). KIT, one of the four German Universities of Excellence, has its Campus West-Süd directly north of Willy-Andreas-Allee. The dormitories of the Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe-Land are distributed throughout Innenstadt-West — Allee, Adenauerring, Engesserstraße. The parking lot between HEK, RSH, ABH, and D7 is therefore also a central student meeting point throughout the year.
Expect a young audience, a deliberately unpretentious format, free admission, and a student DIY atmosphere. No premium experiences, but good beer, good snacks, good bands. Also expect long queues for the toilets and noise until around 1 AM — the festival is legally permitted but deliberately short.
The 2026 format remains unchanged: the parking lot becomes an open-air stage, with the four dormitories' approximately 30 floors each operating a stand with its own culinary concept. The band selection focuses on the Karlsruhe indie, rock, and hip-hop scene, supplemented by selected national acts.
Sponsors like Badische Backstub and Consileon cover the main costs — stage, sound, lighting, artist fees. The dormitory residents handle the operational running of the stands themselves and share the proceeds for their floor's fund.
Detailed lineup will be published on the festival website parkplatzfest.de and Instagram (@parkplatzfest_ka).

Take tram lines S 1, S 11 or bus 30 to Karlsruhe-Mühlburger Tor, then walk for 10 minutes. Cycle directly to the parking lot. Difficult by car — Innenstadt-West is a resident parking zone.
