Light art festival to close the season in Wilhelmsburger Inselpark
Unlike most Hamburg summer highlights, Parkleuchten doesn't rely on grand fireworks and loud DJ sets, but on a subtle form of visual staging: light art. Artists from Wilhelmsburg, Hamburg, and across Germany bring sculptures, projections, and interactive installations to the park. After sunset, a walkable light landscape emerges, offering a completely different approach to urban nature than a typical festival visit.
The central venue is the KulturKapelle in the Inselpark — a modern, sacred-looking concert space in the middle of the park. The light installations are grouped around this chapel. Visitors enter from the Inselparkallee entrance, first passing through the outdoor areas, then approaching the KulturKapelle, where the heart of the event is located.
A clear statement from the organizers: 95 percent of the energy required for the festival comes from solar power. The Inselpark site has its own solar installations for this purpose — and the light artists are asked to use energy-efficient LED technology. This sustainability program is part of the overall Inselpark concept: the park was created in 2013 as part of the International Garden Show heritage and has since seen itself as a model project for urban nature and climate protection.
Spread over two days:
Wilhelmsburg is a district in the Hamburg-Mitte borough, located on an Elbe island between the Norderelbe and Süderelbe — Europe's largest river island. The Inselpark was created in 2013 as part of the International Garden Show and was subsequently repurposed as a public park. With 100 hectares, it is one of Hamburg's largest city parks and a central place for recreation, sports, and cultural events for the approximately 60,000 residents of Wilhelmsburg.
Parkleuchten marks the end of the park season — a deliberately chosen format that, after the loud summer festivals (Wilhelmsburger Inselsommer, Dockville Festival nearby on the Elbe island), sets a quieter, more contemplative note. The festival is free and accessible to all.
Based on the successful 2025 rhythm (September 12–13), a similar date is expected for 2026. The concept remains unchanged: light art around the KulturKapelle, live performances, family and interactive activities, 95 percent solar energy. The exact program structure and artist list will be published starting August 2026.
Complete artist list and program structure will be published from August 2026.
Free admission. Food and drinks at stands around the KulturKapelle cost 3–8 EUR.
