The largest Volksfest (folk festival) in the Gellertstadt in the Stadtpark (city park)
In mid-July, Hainichen's Stadtpark (city park) transforms into the city's largest Volksfest (folk festival). The Parkfest is considered the heart of city life – a weekend when the whole city comes together and attracts visitors from the region. Hainichen, often called the Gellertstadt after the poet Christian Fürchtegott Gellert, who was born here, thrives on this annual tradition.
The Parkfest is celebrated together with the Schützenfest (marksmen's festival) of the Privileged Marksmen's Guild Hainichen. The marksmen's parade, the crowning of the king, and the traditional bird shooting are combined with classic folk festival activities – carousels, stalls, food and drink, and live music. A sports awards ceremony has been a fixed part of the program for years, often with prominent guests from German sports.
In 2026, special names are on the program: Linda Feller, the 'Queen of Country', will bring German-language country music to the main stage. The sports awards ceremony will be hosted by former professional footballer Ralf Minge, a long-time idol of Dynamo Dresden. The Envia city competition on stationary bikes will complement the sports program.
Hainichen is located in the Mittelsachsen district (AGS 14522), in the state of Saxony, between Chemnitz and Freiberg. The town, with around 8,000 inhabitants, lives from its industrial history and its literary connection to the Enlightenment thinker Gellert. The Parkfest is one of the city's most important sources of identity – a must-attend event for all Hainichen residents and a worthwhile destination for visitors from Mittelsachsen.
The Parkfest and the Schützenfest (marksmen's festival) of the Privileged Marksmen's Guild Hainichen go hand in hand. The marksmen's parade, the crowning of the king on Sunday, and the bird shooting form the traditional pillars – carousels, food and drink, stalls, and live music provide the folk festival setting.
The 'Queen of Country', born in Thuringia and now living in Dresden, is one of the established stars of the German-language country music scene. At the Parkfest, she will present well-known hits and her new production 'Mein Herz schlägt auch ohne dich' (My Heart Beats Even Without You).
By car via the A4 (Berbersdorf exit) and then on the B169. By train to Frankenberg/Saxony or Hainichen, then walk to the Stadtpark (city park).
Free entry to the festival grounds. Food, drinks, and rides are subject to a charge.
Saturday evening, with its live music, is traditionally very busy. Plan your journey in advance.
