Advent market with Wichtelhaus and mining theme
Frankenberg is a small town in the Mittelsachsen district, on the western edge of the Mittelsachsen hill country and at the foot of the Ore Mountains. The town's Christmas market is part of the regional tradition of Ore Mountains Christmas markets but has developed its own character: curated stalls, themed areas, and a strong family focus through the 'Wichtelhaus'.
With over 30 stalls, the market is manageable — and that's intentional. Each stall is curated, with a focus on regional crafts, sweets, food, and gifts. 8 food stalls offer hearty dishes, 4 dedicated mulled wine stands offer hot drinks, plus 4 sweet stalls for cookies, chocolate, and gingerbread. Gluten-free options are available at several stalls.
What sets the market apart from the many Advent markets in Mittelsachsen are the thematically designed areas. The 'Wichtelhaus' is housed in the converted historic town archive — featuring a model railway layout, a craft and tombola area, pony rides, and a miniature railway around the market fountain. Other festive areas are decorated as 'Stadl' and 'Bergwerk', referencing the region's mining past.
Frankenberg is located between Chemnitz and Mittweida, in the Mittelsachsen district. The region is characterized by the Mittelsachsen hill country and the Zschopau river. Those who wish to combine the market with a day trip can visit Sachsenburg Castle, Mildenstein Castle in Leisnig, or the Mittelsächsische Bahn.
As in previous years, the market opens on the first weekend of Advent. The 'Wichtelhaus' remains the central family attraction with a model railway, craft corner, and pony rides. Heated pavilions, the St. Nicholas house, and the 'Stadl' and 'Bergwerk' themed areas are established. Gluten-free options are offered at several stalls.
