Cultural Night of the Frankenberg Merchants in September
In September, the Frankenberg merchants and studio owners open their doors well into the evening. What began as classic late-afternoon shopping has evolved into a cultural night: live music at selected shops, small performances in studios, warm food and snacks at most businesses, plus a glass of wine in hand. What started as an experimental format in 2017 has become a fixed date in the Frankenberg event calendar — the 2025 edition (September 19, 2025) was a complete success for the town and the trade association. The continuation is announced for September 2026.
The concept is deliberately accessible: free admission, no festival ticket, no fixed program points with specific times. Those who walk through the city center discover open shops and studios, hear live music here and there (often singer-songwriters, acoustic duos, saxophonists), enjoy mulled wine or a glass from a vintner, chat with merchants and artists, and perhaps discover one or another product. A small "night watchman tour" led by a local city guide has accompanied the format in recent years, creating additional atmosphere.
"Licht & Wein" is supported by the Frankenberg merchants themselves — coordinated by the Frankenberg Trade Association and the Bildungsverein Frankenberg/Sa. e.V. It is an example of how regional retail and culture work hand in hand to create visibility for the city center. In an environment heavily influenced by online retail, the format is an important sign of life for small businesses.
Frankenberg/Sa. is located in the Mittelsachsen district, on the Zschopau river, between Chemnitz and Hainichen. The small town with around 13,000 inhabitants was once a textile center and has well-preserved its old town with the Lützelhof, the town church of St. Aegidien, and the market square. Those visiting the cultural night should consider a day trip to the nearby Sachsenburg Castle or the mining town of Freiberg.
The 2026 cultural night will follow the proven format. The exact date will be communicated on the organizer's website and Facebook page. The event typically starts at 6 PM and lasts well into the evening.
Detailed program will be published on kultur-frankenberg.de/licht-wein and via the Facebook page Licht und Wein Frankenberg.
