Westphalian Customs on Holy Saturday

The Easter bonfire of the Interessengemeinschaft Beckinghausener Vereine is one of the traditional custom Easter bonfires in Lünen-Beckinghausen. On Saturday, April 4, 2026, at 6:00 PM, the Easter bonfire, officially registered with the City of Lünen, will burn at the old sports field at Kreuzstraße 115 – a Holy Saturday event that brings the small district of Beckinghausen together.

The Easter Bonfire as a Custom

Easter bonfires have been deeply rooted in Westphalia for centuries. Originally a pagan-pre-Christian spring fire, reinterpreted in Christian terms as a celebration of the resurrection on the eve of Holy Saturday, today it is simply a custom meeting point for the districts. Associations, families, and neighbors gather around the large fire, which is built from brushwood, shrub cuttings, and old wood – often prepared for days by volunteer helpers.

Beckinghausen — Small District with Strong Associations

Beckinghausen is a small district of Lünen in the east of the city with only about 1,000 inhabitants. This small size makes the Easter bonfire an almost familial gathering – residents know each other, many come with children, grandparents, and relatives. The Interessengemeinschaft Beckinghausener Vereine is the umbrella organization of local associations (sports club, shooting club, fire department support group, heritage society, carnival) that organize the fire together.

The Beckinghausen fire is one of 33 officially registered Easter bonfires in Lünen in 2026 – this shows how strong the customs are in this Westphalian city. Program Expectation
