A Duisburg Neighbourhood Tradition with Fireworks, St. Martin's Procession and Weckmänner
From November 5th to 9th, 2026, the Duisburg district of Meiderich celebrates its 41st St. Martin's Market — one of the oldest and most popular neighbourhood festival traditions in Duisburg's north. Von-der-Mark-Straße will be closed, carousels, shooting galleries, and culinary stalls will set up along the main street, and the station forecourt will serve as a second festival area with larger rides.
Saint Martin of Tours (316–397) is one of the most famous saints in the Catholic Church. The renowned legend of the cloak sharing (Martin shared his cloak with a freezing beggar on a winter day) is deeply rooted in Rhenish customs — to this day, on St. Martin's Day (November 11th), children parade through the streets with homemade lanterns, sing St. Martin's songs, and receive Weckmänner (sweet yeast pastries shaped like men). The Meiderich St. Martin's Market embraces this tradition and celebrates it as a central neighbourhood festival. An old folk tradition that has been celebrated annually in Meiderich since 1985.
Meidericher City-Management e.V. is the association of Meiderich traders and clubs that promotes neighbourhood life and organises events such as the St. Martin's Market, the Spring Market, and Sunday shopping events. Contact: Heike Wiehe ([email protected], Tel. 0171/126 769-6).
The Duisburg district of Meiderich, with around 38,000 inhabitants, is located in the north of the city — north of the industrial harbour, bordering Oberhausen. Long shaped by mining (Friedrich Thyssen Colliery) and the Niederrhein Steelworks (now Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, an architectural landmark of structural change), Meiderich has developed a remarkable neighbourhood culture since the 1980s. The St. Martin's Market symbolises the cohesion of a working-class city that actively cherishes and celebrates its traditions.
The market is centrally located in Meiderich on Von-der-Mark-Straße — the district's main shopping street. Duisburg-Meiderich station is only 200 metres away, with regular connections to Duisburg Central Station. By car, you can reach it via the A 59 or Ruhrorter Straße. Parking is available in the side streets, and on market days also in the vicinity of the station.
