Running between blast furnaces and Halloween pumpkins
The Halloween Run Duisburg is an idea that works in only one place in the world: the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord. The former Thyssen Meiderich steelworks, shut down in 1985 and transformed into an industrial-natural landscape since 1994, is now one of Europe's most famous industrial monuments. The rusty blast furnaces, the overgrown railway tracks, and the illuminated gasometers provide the perfect backdrop in the dark for a run on Halloween.
Distances for all levels
The running concept is inclusive. Bambini run approx. 500 m for the little ones, Pupils' run approx. 1.2 km for school children, 2.5 km as an entry-level distance for hobby runners and walkers, 5 km as a classic fun run distance, and 10 km for more ambitious runners. All distances are offered with run and walk categories. The course leads multiple times through the illuminated halls, past the blast furnaces, and through the park-like areas of the Landschaftspark.
Halloween costumes as a trademark
What makes the Halloween Run unique: Costumes are not only allowed but encouraged. Witches, zombies, vampires, skeletons, and ghosts jog alongside 'normal' runners. There are prizes for the best costumes. The park is equipped with additional lighting effects, Halloween decorations, and pumpkin-lined sections. It's a night run – the sporting challenge combines with a Halloween party atmosphere.
Registration and pricing system
Registration is in three price tiers: Early bird until September 30, regular price from October 1, on-site registration. Bambini run starts from €12.90, Pupils' run from €15.90, longer distances from €28.90 (2.5 km), €30.90 (5 km), and €34.90 (10 km). Included services: personalized bibs mailed by post, electronic timing, finisher medal, and online results list.
Landschaftspark as an event location
The Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord has been known for years for its atmospheric large-scale events: the Traumzeit Festival (music), Ruhr-in-Love (electronic music), concerts, climbing events at the blast furnace, and diving training in the disused gasometer. The Halloween Run joins this series, offering a sporting variant. The exhibition area covers about 200 hectares; the park is freely accessible during the day and elaborately illuminated at night.
Duisburg in the Ruhr area
Duisburg, with over 500,000 inhabitants, is the largest city on the Lower Rhine and the largest inland port in Europe, belonging to the northern Ruhr area. The Meiderich district, where the park is located, was a center of German heavy industry for over a century. Today, the Landschaftspark symbolizes the structural change from industry to culture, sport, and recreation – an example of Ruhr area renewal that also gives the Halloween Run its special depth.
