ExtraSchicht — the staging of Ruhr Area's industrial culture

What the Berlin Museum Night is for the capital, ExtraSchicht is for the Ruhr area: a single night when former steelworks, mines, colliery sites, and industrial buildings between Dortmund and Duisburg become one large walkable light art sculpture. On Saturday, June 27, 2026, the next edition will take place — and Duisburg is centrally represented with two spectacular main venues: Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord and the Duisburg Inner Harbour.

Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord — Blast Furnace as Light Art

Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord on the grounds of the decommissioned Meiderich steelworks (Thyssen) is the iconic main venue for ExtraSchicht in the Ruhr area. Illuminated on normal nights by British artist Jonathan Park, it becomes the stage for a choreographed staging program during ExtraSchicht:

• Blast furnace platforms illuminated — all former blast furnaces glow in different color codes; visitors climb up for 360° panoramas
• Stage program on several squares in the park — live music, industrial beats, classical compositions with blast furnace acoustics
• Drone show 2026 — new program focus with choreographed drone light installations over the steelworks site
• City Beach 2026 — temporary beach facility with sand, stage, and cocktail bar (new in the 2026 edition)
• Diving demonstrations in the former gasometer basin (the largest artificial diving site in Germany)

Duisburg Inner Harbour — The Second Venue

The Inner Harbour, as the second main Duisburg venue, offers a different atmosphere: a former industrial area, now a harbor with restaurants, a marina, and museums (MKM Museum Küppersmühle). As part of ExtraSchicht, a stage program with live music, light installations along the harbor basin, and themed tours ('From the Harbor to the Steelworks') will be offered here.

Ruhr Area-Wide Festival — One Ticket for All 50+ Locations

ExtraSchicht is Ruhr area-wide: over 50 venues in 20 cities — from Zollverein Colliery in Essen and Henrichshütte in Hattingen to the Phoenix-West site in Dortmund. A single ticket is valid for all locations, and a free shuttle bus system takes visitors from one venue to another. The organizer is Ruhr Tourismus GmbH (RTG), which has been organizing the festival since 2001 — now one of Germany's most-attended cultural events with over 200,000 visitors.

Industrial Culture as the Identity of the Ruhr Area

ExtraSchicht is not just a festival, but a statement of the Ruhr area's identity: The old industrial sites are not decaying ruins but are reinterpreted and illuminated as cultural locations — as places of memory, transformation, and the future. This infusion of cultural value into industrial architecture is a specific achievement of the 'Route of Industrial Culture' and the Ruhr area's tourism strategy of past decades.

Duisburg — A Hub of Industrial Culture on the Rhine

The independent city of Duisburg, with its approximately 500,000 inhabitants, is located at the confluence of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers — and boasts Europe's largest inland port, the Duisburg Port, and a particularly dense industrial culture landscape with its former industrial sites (Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, Inner Harbour, blast furnaces). Also worth seeing are the Lehmbruck Museum (20th-century sculpture) and the MKM Museum Küppersmühle. ExtraSchicht is one of the cultural highlights with which Duisburg positions itself regionally.
