International art festival with around 80 artists in the Süßgrund forest near Lahnstein-Friedrichssegen
In just a few years, Forestival has carved out a firm place in the cultural landscape along the Lahn and Middle Rhine rivers. Every year, a temporary open-air gallery emerges in the picturesque Süßgrund forest near Lahnstein-Friedrichssegen: around 80 artists from Germany and several European countries build their works directly into the forest.
The focus is on Land Art – the art form that works with natural materials and embeds the artwork into the landscape. Woven structures of willow branches, floating glass installations, stone circles, painted tree trunks, or sound objects made of bamboo respond to the topography, light, and mood of the forest.
A 1.5 km long art avenue forms the backbone of the festival, leading past most of the main works. Those who want to see more can take the Große Runde (Great Loop) of 3.5 km, which delves deeper into the Süßgrund. Symposia with artists, guided tours, and workshops complement the program.
A special feature is the admission model: instead of a fixed price, Forestival asks for a donation. Those who appreciate the work of the artists and organizers contribute what they deem appropriate. This keeps the festival open to a broad audience – from school trips to art collectors.
In 2026, Forestival is part of the Rhineland-Palatinate Summer of Culture, whose motto this year is 'The Golden Twenties'. In the Süßgrund forest, this means a play with departure, glamour, and modernity – and the question of how the themes of that era can be reinterpreted today, a century later.
With its sixth edition, Forestival solidifies its reputation as one of the most prominent art festivals in western Rhineland-Palatinate. Its inclusion in the Summer of Culture brings additional visibility and fosters artistic networking with other projects in the state.
Nine days of open exhibition allow for a relaxed visiting rhythm – whether as an extended day trip or as a repeated visit over two weekends.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
