Herten — the Ruhr area city between Recklinghausen and Bochum

If you are travelling in the western Ruhr area, in the district of Recklinghausen, you will come to Herten — a medium-sized city with around 60,000 inhabitants, formerly characterised by hard coal mining, today an administrative and residential city. Herten is located between Recklinghausen, Marl, Castrop-Rauxel and Gelsenkirchen — in the middle of the western Ruhr area. The Tiöns-Kirmes is the central spring funfair of the city and is as much a part of Herten's event calendar as Herten Castle is to the city's identity.

Tiöns-Kirmes — the special name

The unusual name 'Tiöns-Kirmes' is a Herten peculiarity. 'Tiöns' is Low German dialect for 'Antonius' — meaning Antonius-Kirmes. The connection: St. Antonius parish church in the centre of Herten (today the Westerholt district) is the historical reference point. Classic patron saint funfair constellation: Antonius' feast day (January 17) as the founding date, shifted over the centuries to the late spring — Antonius' feast day in winter is climatically unsuitable for a funfair, the later date with better weather prevailed.

Corpus Christi Weekend 2026 — May 30 to June 2

The Tiöns-Kirmes 2026 runs from Thursday, May 30, 2026 (Corpus Christi, public holiday in NRW) to Sunday, June 2, 2026 — four days of festivities over the long weekend. This choice of date is strategically clever: Corpus Christi as a bridge day brings families and workers for four full days of folk festival. Daily opening hours 11:00 am to 10:00 pm.

City Centre Area — Vitusstraße to Wittkamp

The funfair grounds extend across Herten city centre:

  • Vitusstraße (central festival axis)
  • Ewaldstraße
  • Antoniusstraße
  • Hermannstraße
  • Am Wittkamp car park (larger ride area)

This extensive city traversal makes the Tiöns-Kirmes a major city centre event — visitors move between the streets, combining a stroll through the city with the funfair experience.

Rides and Flea Market

The programme includes classic showman attractions:

  • Carousels for toddlers and families
  • Dodgems as a classic
  • Ferris wheel for city views from above
  • Swing carousel, strongman game, ring toss stalls
  • Classic food stalls: bratwurst, chips, potato pancakes, crêpes, gingerbread hearts
  • Candy floss as a standard children's specialty

A flea market runs concurrently along the shopping streets — Herten residents and hobby sellers set up stalls. A classic combination of folk festival and market event.

Dutch Classics as a Herten Tradition

A special Herten tradition are the Dutch Classics at the Tiöns-Kirmes — food specialties from the Netherlands (frikandel, fries with mayonnaise and peanut sauce, bitterballen, stroopwafels). The Dutch border is just under 100 km from Herten, and there are historical economic ties in the region — the Dutch Classics stand is an identity-forming Herten peculiarity.

Parking Ban from Tuesday, May 28

Important for residents: The car parks Am Wittkamp and on Vitusstraße will be closed from Tuesday, May 28, 6:00 am, for the setup of the rides. The closure lasts until Sunday, June 2. Residents in this area will need to find alternative parking.

Funfairs in the Western Ruhr Area — Context

The Tiöns-Kirmes is part of a dense spring funfair landscape in the western Ruhr area. Similar dates: Recklinghausen Whitsun Funfair, Marl City Festival with Funfair, Castrop-Rauxel Folk Festival. This distribution of funfairs throughout spring and early summer makes the western Ruhr area a true folk festival region — if you invest one day per weekend, you can visit a different funfair almost every weekend.

Tiöns-Kirmes 2026

The 2026 edition takes place over the extended Corpus Christi weekend — the optimal timing for a four-day city centre funfair.
